  • Team outlook: The Chargers return first-team, all-league players Kepilino and Ibbotson, second-team all-league pick Peterson and get Lisnock, a transfer who started last year at Fountain Valley. “I think we’ll be a pretty solid team,” Kelly said. “Our goal is to compete for the league championship and make the playoffs. I definitely feel that we should have a strong year.”
  • The schedule: A strong nonleague schedule includes games against Mira Costa and appearances at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix and the Larry Doyle Orange County Championships, which the Chargers co-host with Marina.

  • Team outlook: Erving and Noe Viloria were first-team all-league picks last year and, along with Murray, give the Oilers experienced starters. “With a tough schedule ahead, we are looking to be very competitive in every game,” McClurg said. “This is going to be the first year in the Sea View League, so we will be facing new teams this year in league. We are looking to place in the top of league and qualify for CIF. The strengths of this year’s team is the height we bring to the court as well as a strong inside game. Speed will be something the team will need to work on.”

  • *Marina Vikings

  • League: Sunset

  • Team Outlook: The Vikings have won two-straight league titles and 48 games in the last two years. They lost veteran varsity players Rachael Maulit, Erin Barney, Lindsey Schulze and Allison Budzinski to graduation, but get Sitivi, a transfer from Huntington Beach who was the Sunset’s second-leading rebounder last year as a freshman, in the lineup. “We are going to grow, we are going to stumble, we are going to learn,” Fredlow said. “We will play hard. We will get better from December to February.”
  • The schedule: The nonleague slate includes games against 2006 CIF finalist Villa Park, top-10 squad Orange Lutheran, Aliso Niguel and Trabuco Hills, the Larry Doyle Tournament of Champions, Santa Barbara Tournament and University Tournament.

  • Other returners: Corey Ferraro (5-10, 160, G, Sr.); Eric Ferraro (5-8, 150, G, Jr.); Derek Moriyama (6-5, 220, C, Sr.);
  • Newcomers: Kyle Boswell (5-9, 145, G, Fr.); Nick Capriccio (6-4, 180, F, Fr.); Carl Eberts (6-5, 190, F, Jr.); Mike Hoida (6-4, 185, F, Sr.); Garrett Yamasaki (5-8, 145, G, Jr.); Derris Douty (6-5, 280, C, Jr.); John Grier (5-10, 160, G, Sr.); Josh O’Brien (5-10, 165, G, Sr.); Hunter White (5-10, 205, G, Sr.).
  • Team outlook: “The Chargers are what some would call in a rebuilding year but we call it a reloading year,” Boyce said. “While we lack experience we make up for with effort and execution. Look for the Chargers to surprise teams that take us lightly because we graduated 10 players. The players we have are committed to carrying on the excellence shown by past years’ Charger teams that we’re very successful.”
  • The schedule: The Chargers play a tough nonleague slate with nonleague games against Aliso Niguel, El Toro, Trabuco Hills and Canyon/Canyon Country. Prior to Christmas, they’ll be in Hawaii to compete against top teams from around the country at the Maui Invitational.
  • Season opener: Friday at Aliso Niguel.
  • *Huntington Beach Oilers

  • League: Sea View
  • Head coach: Fabian Luna (1st)
  • Staff: Shawn McManus; Robert Deck; Michael Deck; Joshua Acosta; Andy Becker
  • Last year’s record: 11-16

  • Other returners: Ryan Shillito (6-0, G, Sr.)
  • Newcomers: Neil Negrete (6-7, C, Soph.); Randy Guite (5-10, G, Jr.); Zachary Kimber (6-1, G, Soph.); Nicholas Neser (5-10, G, Soph.)
  • Team outlook: The Oilers have a first-year coach in Luna who previously coached at Kennedy and Paramount. They will be led by Becker, a first-team all-Sunset pick a year ago and Carroll who received league honorable mention status. “A rebuilding year under a new system, but have the talent to be a possible surprise team this year,” Luna said. “The returning backcourt of Becker and Carroll and a solid core of good young players will keep us in a lot of games. We are looking to be improved from last year and will be vying for a CIF playoff berth.”

  • The schedule: A challenging nonleague schedule has the Oilers playing in the Coyote Classic, La Quinta Classic, Coast X-Mas Classic and North/South Challenge before entering their first year in the Sea View League.
  • Season opener: Currently playing at Buena Park (Coyote Classic) tournament

  • The schedule: Key nonleague games for the Vikings include road tests at Western and the Fullerton tournament, Tesoro and a trip to Hawaii for tournament play.
  • Next game: Currently playing in Western Tournament
