Green machine rolls to crown

It took the final game of the 2006 Pop Warner Football season for the opposition to score on the Huntington Beach Green Chargers, but that did little to dampen the celebration the team enjoyed Saturday.

Huntington wrapped up a perfect season by defeating the previously unbeaten La Verne Spartans, 25-6, to win the Junior Pee Wee Division’s WESCON (Western Conference) regional championship.

During the season, the Green Chargers outscored their outmanned opponents, 373-6.

Huntington seized control of the Saturday’s championship game early, taking an 6-0 lead on a touchdown run by Trevor Borkowski. La Verne shocked the Chargers by returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, but a blocked conversion attempt left the score 6-6.

A TD run by Huntington’s Treavon Coley brought the score to 14-6 at the half.

Stone Escobedo, Sam Doxakis, Robert Rice and Aaron Vargas all recorded sacks in the first-half of play.

Huntington’s defense completely shut down the Spartans in the second half with Borkowski and Allen Vogelsang getting interceptions and Peter Russo, Steven Tovatt, Roman Smith and Steele Escobedo recording sacks.

Borkowski finished the game with two interceptions.

With 4:46 remaining in the fourth quarter, Borkowski scored on a run, Coley provided the extra point and the Green Chargers increased their lead to 19-6. Roman Smith and a final pass interception by Tovatt put the ball back in.

An interception by Tovatt set up the Huntington offense again, with Coley doing the scoring honors with a minute left to put the Green Chargers up 25-6.

The Green Chargers, coached by Kevin Smith, include Trevor Borkowski, Treavon Coley, Sam Doxakis, Steele Escobedo, Stone Escobedo, Seth Shearer-Fox, Blake Hinchliff, Trevor Loflin, Matthew McKenzie, Charles Mendola, Andrew Mickle, Jordan Palomino, Robert Rice, Peter Russo, Roman Smith, Steven Tovatt, Aaron Vargas, Allen Vogelsang and Tyler Warren.
