COSTA MESA — Nikki Brannon scored 14 points to help lead the Mustangs to their season-opening win on Wednesday.

Jennifer Courtney, Jasmine Werdel and Michelle Figueroa contributed with 11 points each. Courtney and Werdel both grabbed eight rebounds.

Jamie McGee added 11 points and Connor Rose scored 10 for Sage Hill, which will face St. Monica today.

BUENA PARK — Eagles’ guard Blake Pinto hit a go-ahead three-pointer with nine seconds remaining to cap a last-minute rally in Estancia’s third-round win in the 12-team Coyote Classic Thursday.

Pinto scored a game-high 35 points on eight-of-12 shooting from three-point range.

Estancia trailed by three with 40 seconds remaining when Troy McClanahan hit a three-pointer to tie the game. The Eagles made a defensive stand before Pinto secured the game.

WRESTLING

Battle by the Bay

Fifteen wrestling programs will compete in the Battle by the Bay Tournament, a two-day event getting underway today at 3 p.m. at Corona del Mar High.

The tournament held by Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar will feature pool play the first day, following double-elimination matches Saturday at 9 a.m.

Newport Harbor won the tournament last year, the first year it was held, beating Santa Ana Valley. Other Orange County schools that are scheduled to participate are Estancia, Woodbridge, University, Western, Aliso Niguel, Orange, Tustin and Santa Ana Valley.
