CdM sixth in nation

PORTLAND, Ore. — Coach Bill Sumner’s words said it all.

“The beat goes on,” the Corona del Mar High girls cross country coach said after the Sea Kings finished sixth at the Nike Team Nationals.

Sarah Cummings finished eighth in 19 minutes, 38.9 seconds on the 5K muddy course and Shelby Buckley took 10th in 19:51.2 to advance to next week’s Foot Locker Invitational in San Diego.

At the time of his statement, Sumner though CdM had finished second because of malfunctioning of the time keeping, Sumner said. When the smoke cleared, Corona del Mar finished sixth at the meet. Allison Damon finished 17th (20:12.4), Hillary May 82nd in 21:35.5, Allison Gushue 93rd in 21:48.1, Christie St. Geme 102nd in 22:06.5 and Nicole Slykhous was 112th in 22:27.2 for Corona del Mar.
