He was named the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year this season for the second consecutive year and also was selected to the All-Far West Region first team.

UCI SIGNS THREE

Kevin Carroll, Carson Clark and Bryce Danker have signed national letters of intent with the UC Irvine men’s volleyball team, Coach John Speraw said.

Carroll, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, plays for Los Alamitos High. He was named 2006 third-team All-American by Mizuno Volleyball Magazine. He played on the USA men’s junior national team.

Clark, a 6-6 opposite, has been a three-time All-CIF Southern Section honoree out of Santa Barbara High. He was named one of the 50 Players to Watch by Volleyball Magazine.

Danker is a 6-6 middle blocker from Esperanza High, which is also in the same league, Sunset, that Carroll plays in. Danker played two years on the Southern California Volleyball Assn. High Performance team that went to Italy last summer.

“I think these three guys help us across the net,” Speraw said. “We get a great outside hitter in Kevin, losing All-American Matt Webber at opposite gives Carson a chance to compete right away and losing David Smith in the middle gives Bryce a chance to get on the court. They will all have a chance to make an immediate impact on our program.”

GRUMMAN EARNS HONORS

Sasha Grumman, a Newport Harbor High product, was recently named to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference second team for field hockey after her first season with Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

She was Kenyon’s lone representative on the All-NCAC second team. She started as a defender, but late in the year became more involved in the offense and recorded five goals and four assists to help lead Kenyon to its best season in school history.

The Ladies finished 18-6 and won their first-ever NCAA game with a 1-0 win over Juniata College in the Division III tournament. Grumman broke free in the Eagles’ zone and unloaded a shot from the right side that went off the goalie and Grumman’s teammate put in the rebound for the game-winning shot with 1:45 left in the first overtime period.

Kenyon also defeated previously unbeaten College of Wooster, 2-1, to win the NCAC.
