Oilers topple Chargers in tourney final

The championship game of the Lady Centurion Classic in Santa Ana Saturday came down to a battle between two Huntington Beach girls’ basketball teams.

The Huntington Beach Oilers outscored the Edison Chargers by nine points in the final quarter and pulled out a 56-50 victory and the tournament title at Century High.

The Oilers’ Jasmine Erving led all scorers with 21 points. She also had nine rebounds and two blocks. Teammate Noe Viloria also hit double figures with 19 points.

Melanie Lisnock and Mary Madden each scored 13 points to pace Edison.

In previous action at the tournament, Huntington dominated Tesoro, 53-40. The Oilers raced to a 32-13 halftime lead over the Titans. Erving scored a game-high 20 points.

Edison rallied in the fourth quarter to overtake Northwood, 48-44. Kelly Peterson poured in a game-high 22 points for the Chargers.

In other girls’ basketball action:

Marina came up with a stiff defensive effort in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game against Peninsula and pulled out a 55-47 victory. The Vikings outscored the Panthers, 15-4, in the fourth quarter to rally for the win.

Rita Sitivi scored 23 points and Alyssa Starkey finished with 14 points to lead Marina.

Previously, Marina opened its season with a fourth-quarter rally, this one allowed the Vikings to top host University, 57-55. Starkey scored 14 points.

In boys’ basketball:

Huntington ran its win streak to three games with a 58-53 win over Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana. Nick Becker connected on four, three-point baskets en route to 26 points for the Oilers. Trevor Carroll added 17 points.

In the championship game of the San Luis Obispo Tournament, Ocean View got off to a slow start and ended up falling to Santa Margarita, 64-47.

In girls’ water polo:

Edison scored a minor upset when the Chargers edged eighth-ranked Long Beach Millikan, 7-6, at Huntington Beach High.

The Charger shot out to a 7-2 halftime lead and then held on for the win. Two-meter defenders Danielle Warde and Monique Wilson led the defensive charge for Edison.

Wilson, Jamie Bee and Joanna Tiplea each scored twice and Warde scored once.

Wilson also had four steals and Amelia Huss recorded seven saves.

In a previous match, Edison fell, 7-5, to No. 10 Long Beach Wilson in its season opener at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

Wilson scored three goals and Bee had two. Keeley McCormack had three steals, Warde two steals and Huss nine saves and three steals.

“Our team put in a strong effort,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “We have some things to work on, but I was happy with their performance. This team has great chemistry. So far this year it has been a real pleasure coaching these girls.”
