HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:Caldwell’s 24 leads Tars to its tourney title game

NEWPORT BEACH — Kyle Caldwell helped Newport Harbor High punch its ticket to tonight’s championship game of the Bill Reynolds Classic.

The junior scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Sailors boys’ basketball team to a 65-35 semifinal win over Hugh Boyd of Vancouver, British Columbia at Newport Harbor Friday night.

Caldwell also grabbed 11 rebounds. He had 19 points at halftime and did not play in the fourth quarter, Newport Harbor Coach Larry Hirst said.

Senior Weston Dunlap added 10 points and senior Chad Stassel contributed nine points for Newport Harbor.

The Sailors (3-1) will face La Costa Canyon tonight at 7:30 at Newport Harbor.

NEWPORT COAST — The Lightning’s Kara Percival scored just before halftime to help Sage Hill tie with the Mustangs in a nonleague game Friday.

The Mustangs scored first, as Sharon Frazier made good on a breakaway. Percival answered with her goal off a free kick.

Hannah Macleod recorded four saves for Sage Hill.

The Lightning (1-2-1) plays host to Connelly Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Costa Mesa (0-4-1) will play host to Saddleback Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Trabuco Hills 3, Newport 2

NEWPORT BEACH — Evan Walker and Ulises Vega scored one goal each for the Sailors in the nonleague game at Newport Harbor Friday.

Goalie Kevin Etter recorded five saves for the Sailors (0-2), who were tied, 1-1, with Trabuco Hills at halftime.

Newport Harbor plays host to Costa Mesa on Monday a 5 p.m.

SANTA ANA — Nikki Brannon and Miriah Malapira scored 10 points each to lead the Mustangs to the victory in consolation play of the Mater Dei Tournament Friday night.

IRVINE — Amber Munnelly scored 10 points for the Sailors in their eight-place semifinal loss of the University Tournament Friday.

Ivy Melo, Newport’s senior starting point guard who scored seven points, sprained her ankle in the third quarter and could be out for at least three weeks, Newport Harbor Coach Jennifer Thompson said.

Newport finishes University Tournament play today at 11:30 a.m.
