Santa Ana Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a pizza delivery man found locked in the trunk of his car in Costa Mesa on Friday night. The delivery driver was reportedly assaulted in Santa Ana, where he was then locked in the trunk, police said.

Costa Mesa police responded to a call at about 8 p.m. that a man was yelling for help from the car in Wimbledon Park, Costa Mesa Lt. Dale Birney said. He was found in the trunk.

Through subsequent interviews with the man, Costa Mesa police determined the assault occurred in Santa Ana, and Santa Ana Police were called, Birney said.

The man was making a delivery for the Santa Ana Z Pizza at Bristol Street and Sunflower Avenue when he was confronted by a man and a woman, who was driving an older model black Ford Explorer, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Loren Wyrick said. The man took the pizza deliverer’s wallet and apparently drove the delivery man’s car to Costa Mesa.

The delivery driver suffered facial injuries during the caper. The thief is described as having tattoos on his arm. No description of the woman was given.
