HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:Sage’s Capaldi scores four goals in blowout

NEWPORT COAST — Ben Capaldi scored four goals to help lead the Sage Hill School boys’ soccer team to a 9-0 nonlegaue win over visiting Fairmont Prep Tuesday.

Braden Ross added two goals for Sage Hill (4-0-1), which scored six in the second half. Tyler Ellis, Nick Singarella and Mark Milner contributed one goal each.

Ellis and Michael Bear produced two assists each. Singarella and Conrad Whitaker had one assist each.

Goalie Beau Caillouette finished with one save for the Lightning, the No. 10-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division VI will play host to Corona del Mar Friday at 7 p.m.

Newport Harbor 42,

University 38

NEWPORT BEACH — Junior Josh George took the mat for the final match of the dual meet with the Sailors trailing by two. His pin in one minute, 28 seconds in the 130-pound weight class proved to be the match-winner for Newport Harbor Tuesday.

Grant McKee notched the fastest pin of the evening in 25 seconds in the 103-pound division for the Sailors (6-4), who avenged a nine-point loss to University two weeks ago.

Nick Berstein, 119 pounds, pin in 1:01, Mike Perrotta (135, forfeit), Rush Stevens (152, forfeit), Bryan Bennett (215, pin in 3:29) and Brian Beaudette (heavyweight, pin in 1:47) also won for Newport Harbor.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 60,

Boys Republic 25

CERRITOS — Larry Puente nearly outscored the Rams, finishing with a game-high 23 points to lead the Mustangs to the second-round win in the North Orange County Championships Tuesday at Gahr High.

Mike Molina added eight points, while Adam Gardner and Hao Nguyen contributed six points each for Costa Mesa (5-1).

The Mustangs will play host to Trabuco Hills today in the third round of the tournament that includes 32 teams.

Caldwell went nine for 12 from the free-throw line. Matthew Helfrich contributed nine points for Newport Harbor (4-2).

The Sailors will play host to Mira Costa Thursday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

NEWPORT COAST — Lightning goalkeeper Hannah MacLeod made three saves and Sage Hill fought to a tie in the physical nonleague contest Tuesday.

Senior midfielder Emily Webb left the game with bruises, but Sage Hill Coach Amy Ray said Webb was an integral part of the Lightning’s’ defense.

“She was really aggressive,” Ray said.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 5 in Division VI, is 1-2-2.

Costa Mesa 2, Saddleback 2

COSTA MESA — Kyra Graham’s goal in the 62nd minute led the Mustangs to the nonleague tie Tuesday.

Graham scored on a corner kick from Ayla Medina, who scored the Mustangs’ first goal. Graham’s goal came three minutes after Saddleback had taken a 2-1 lead.

Medina scored on a Marino Lazos assist. Katie Finn recorded two saves for Mesa (0-4-3).

The Mustangs, ranked No. 10 in Division III, will play at Beckman today at 3 p.m.

Capistrano Valley 6,

Corona del Mar 1

CORONA DEL MAR — Hayley Raguse was credited for the Sea Kings’ goal in their nonleague loss Tuesday.

Her corner kick ricocheted off a Capistrano Valley player and went into the net in the 20th minute. Capistrano Valley led 3-1 at halftime.

Goalie Meghan Low recorded seven saves for CdM (2-4-4).

Coach Bryan Middleton said the Sea Kings were without three key players — goalie Cory Cano, Alex Elias and Brynn Johnson — because of illness.

CdM, ranked No. 10 in Division II, returns to action Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. when it plays at El Toro.
