Parochial school sues Coastal Commission

St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange sued the California Coastal Commission on Wednesday for allegedly interfering in the school’s request to build a new campus.

The suit was announced by the Pacific Legal Foundation after the commission pronounced earlier this year that it can hear an appeal of the city’s forthcoming decision to approve the school’s request to modernize and expand its campus.

City Manager Ken Frank has also spoken out against the commission’s decision.

The foundation will represent the school and diocese in the legal action. The complaint is available at the foundation’s Web site: www.pacificlegal.org.

LBHS student named essay contest finalist

Laguna Beach High School freshman Chloe Cunningham, 14, has been named one of three finalists in the “My Teacher, My Story, My Life” essay contest, sponsored by Cox Communications and TNT.

Cunningham wrote about Patricia Twitty, her science teacher at Thurston Middle School.

She will be honored at a reception tonight at Cox’s Rancho Santa Margarita headquarters, where she will read her essay and Twitty will share what teaching has taught her.

Cunningham will also find out at that time whether she won the contest; the grand-prize winner will receive a $1,000 college scholarship, and the honored teacher will win a choice of three getaway trips to Napa Valley, Sedona or Mexico.

The winning student and teacher will also be featured on Cox’s Channel 3 television show, “The MIX.”

Students ages 14 to 18 were asked to write 500-word essays about favorite teachers who made dramatic impacts on their lives. They were judged on five categories, ranging from creativity to grammar.
