Laguna posted a 1-1-1 record in its first appearance in the Irvine Soccer Tournament last weekend.

The Breakers opened the tournament with a strong performance, defeating Saddleback Valley Christian, 5-0, at Heritage Park in Irvine. Kaylee Rees, Nikki Clark and Holden Penney each had a goal and assist, Brianna Lacy and Courtney Capobianco both scored and Laura Renault had an assist.

Lauren Caris needed one save to record the shutout. The defense was paced by junior sweeper Claire Rubel, freshman Kelsey Peterson and senior Wesley Hamchuk.

Laguna fell in its next match, a 4-0 loss to No. 10-ranked El Dorado (Division II). Caris managed six saves and Angela Lozano had four saves.

Laguna Coach Bill Rolfing said Caris left the match early in the second half with a collision-related injury. She was replaced in the net by Lozano.

The Breakers came back to play Fountain Valley to a scoreless tie Saturday in a match halted by rain.

Fountain Valley’s fast and aggressive offense was repeatedly thwarted by the play of Rubel, keeper Sarah Appel and Tasha Cherpas.

“The tournament was a success for us in many ways,” Laguna Coach Bill Rolfing said.

The Breakers will compete at the Palm Desert Tournament beginning Tuesday. The tournament runs through Thursday.
