Vanguard 73, Montana-Western 66

COSTA MESA — Kevin Dalafu finished with 18 points and six assists, helping the Lions jump out to a 19-point halftime lead as they won the nonconference victory Thursday night.

Dennis Heenan added 15 points, and hit three three-pointers for Vanguard (3-8), which shot 61.3% from the field in the first half.

Montana-Western (5-7) was led by Gus McDonald’s 18 points off the bench.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Fairfield 78, UC Irvine 72

IRVINE — Fairfield outscored the Anteaters 16-5 in the final four minutes, 26 seconds to win the nonconference game at the Bren Events Center Thursday.

UC Irvine senior Angie Ned totaled 17 points and surpassed the 1,000 career point plateau; her 1,012 points ranks 12th all-time at UCI. Forward Stephanie Duda matched Ned with a team-high 17 points, adding eight rebounds. Junior Miranda Forry recorded her first career double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds to go with 10 points. Guard Rebecca Maessen had 11 points for the Anteaters.

Sabra Wrice led Fairfield with 17 points including seven of the Stags’ final 16 points to lead them to the victory. The Stags shot 52.8% (28 of 53) from the field and UCI was only 43.1% (25 of 58) from the floor.

In a closely contested game, the score was tied on 10 occasions and the lead changed 11 times. Fairfield would lead 36-32 at the half, but the Anteaters would score the first four points out of intermission and knot the score at 36-36, the sixth tie of the ballgame. The lead would never be more than four points for either team the rest of the way.
