HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:Tars win East Coast tournament

KEENE, N.H. — Guard Chad Stassel finished with 19 points and earned MVP honors by leading the Newport Harbor High boys’ basketball team to a 68-51 win over Keene for the Keene State Classic championship at Keene State College on Thursday night.

Stassel, who averaged 18.6 points during the three-day tournament, led a balanced attack as he was one of three Sailors (8-4) in double figures. The other two were center Kyle Caldwell and forward Weston Dunlap, who each had 17 points.

Caldwell also made the all-tournament team, and he along with teammates will be traveling to Springfield, Mass., where the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located.

Caldwell will get an opportunity to look at his grandpa George Yardley’s plaque. Yardley, a Hall of Famer, graduated from Newport Harbor in 1945 and went on to play at Stanford and then the NBA, where he was a six-time All-Star.

The Sailors will return to action Tuesday when the play host to Estancia at 7 p.m.

Trabuco Hills Tournament

TRABUCO HILLS — Newport Harbor advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament after beating Segerstrom, 3-0, and Capistrano Valley, 2-1, on Thursday at Trabuco Hills High.

Evan Walker scored the unassisted winning goal against Capistrano Valley with under 10 minutes to go. Ulises Vega also scored for Newport (5-3-1). Nathan Freiberg made three saves in the first half and Kevin Etter saved two in the second half.

Garrett Heiser scored two goals in the Sailors’ win over Segerstrom, with Will Reichenstein scoring the other. Freiberg made three saves.

The Sailors play Costa Mesa today at 11:15 a.m. in the quarterfinals.

TRABUCO HILLS — Costa Mesa won its pool, taking a 1-0 win over Mission Viejo before losing to Orange, 5-2, Thursday at Trabuco Hills High.

The Mustangs’ Steve Estrada was credited with the goal in the win over Mission Viejo, while Amir Nasiri and Luis Parra scored in the loss against Orange.

Costa Mesa plays against Newport Harbor today at 11:15 a.m. in the quarterfinals of championship bracket play.

Estancia 0, West Torrance 0

FULLERTON — The Eagles were eliminated from the West Coast Classic after their pool-play tie Thursday at Cal State Fullerton.

Estancia went 0-1-2 in the tournament and were knocked out because Woodbridge defeated defending tournament champion Clovis West, 4-2. The Eagles (4-3-4) tied Clovis West, 2-2, Wednesday.

Estancia returns to action Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Magnolia.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 60, Shafter 40

KONA, Hawaii — Freshman Lindsay Anderson had a team-high 12 points, Christina O’Tousa scored 10 and Corinne Schneiders had nine points for the Sailors in a win over Kern County-based Shafter at the World Youth Basketball Tournament Thursday.

Ivy Melo had six points and seven assists for the Sailors (4-6) in what Coach Jennifer Thompson called their best effort of the season.

Newport Harbor plays Ashbury High today at 10:30 a.m. local time in continued pool play action.

COSTA MESA — Denise Rosello scored a career-high 17 points and Jennifer Courtney added 12 points to lead the Mustangs to a win in the consolation quarterfinals of the Costa Mesa Winter Classic on Thursday.

Rosello hit three three-pointers to help the Mustangs (4-7) advance to the consolation semifinals, where they will play today at noon against Tesoro, which beat Westminster to advance.
