  • EDITOR’S NOTE: A Pilot staffer went to Edwards Metro Pointe 12 to get moviegoers’ opinions of “Dreamgirls,” which opened Christmas Day and stars Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, and Jennifer Hudson in her film debut.

  • “Dreamgirls” is a musical loosely based on the career of Diana Ross and the Supremes — three girls from the projects in Detroit get their big break in the 1960s as back-up singers and then achieve success on their own. As the story unfolds, we’re shown the emotional price each character has to pay to climb to the top.

“The movie was great. The performance by newcomer Jennifer Hudson was amazing. Her voice — every time she took the screen — just drowned out everyone else. The performances also, by Danny Glover and Jamie Foxx, really helped along with the movie and fed the plot very well. I thought that the plot got a little bit thin toward the end, but it ended up working out and it was just a really fun movie versus something that really taught you a lot.”

“I thought the movie was OK — not what I expected, as how they were probably talking about it — probably more with how the acting was, but it was OK. It was mainly more musical, so I guess if people are looking for a movie with more talking ,it’s probably more of a musical type of movie, which is, I’d say, a good musical. There’s a good amount of singing and those things. I thought the cast was pretty good. Totally not at all familiar with what the movie was about — it was the only movie available, but I heard good things about it, so why not try to look at it?”

“I thought it was a very exciting movie. I thought the music was terrific and the performances were very good. I thought that Jennifer Hudson did a terrific job, and I really enjoyed seeing Jamie Foxx and all the supporting cast. I thought they did a terrific job. I thought they were amazing performances.”

“I thought the movie was very good. Jennifer Hudson’s performance, I thought, was amazing. I think that as her first time acting, she gave what I would imagine would be a very Oscar-worthy performance.

The movie itself, I thought, was a little long, but in general, I thought all the performances … were something that would really fit in with the times.

At the same time, Beyonce Knowles — she had, I would say, somewhat of a kind of mediocre performance actually — I thought she was really in the background, which I was not expecting at all.”
