COLLEGE ROUNDUP:Pirates score record-breaking 127 points in easy win over Rio Hondo

COSTA MESA — The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team set a school record for points in a game in a dominating 127-59 win over Rio Hondo in the OCC New Year’s Crossover on Saturday.

OCC’s 127 points breaks the previous-best school record of 116 set in 1992. It also ties the OCC men’s basketball record.

Devin Hundley scored a team-high 24 points, including six three-pointers, for the Pirates (14-3), while Courtney Ford added 21 and Robin Smith contributed 20. Katie Kissee scored 18 points — all of them on three-pointers — for OCC, which scored more points in the first half (68) than Rio Hondo (1-12) did on the game.

OCC shot 51 of 95 (54%) from the field, and almost as well from three-point range (19 of 38 for 50%). Hundley was six for eight from beyond the three-point line.

Ruby Catani led Rio Hondo with a game-high 26 points. The Pirates open Orange Empire Conference play at home against Golden West on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 68, UC Davis 48

DAVIS — UCI guards Michael Hunter and Chuma Awaji each recorded career highs in combining for 34 points as the Anteaters won their first road game of the season with a 68-48 victory over UC Davis Saturday night.

Hunter, a 5-10 freshman, scored a game-high 18 points with 16 coming in the second half. He was 6 of 7 from the field and added three assists, one steal and no turnovers in 29 minutes. In the last three games, Hunter has recorded 30 points, 19 assists and just one turnover in 73 minutes.

Awaji, a 6-3 junior, scored 16 points, hitting 5 of 6 field goals, and added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

UCI, 6-8 overall, won back-to-back games for the first time this season as the Anteaters had defeated Harvard, 81-48, Thursday. UCI was 0-7 in true road games this season before winning against UC Davis. In fact, the Anteaters’ last road win was against the Aggies, 82-68, in Davis last Feb. 23.

The ‘Eaters open Big West Conference play at home against Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

IRVINE — Stephanie Duda scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the ‘Eaters lost a nonconference game at home Saturday.

Miranda Forry and Annie Mai added 12 and 11 points respectively for UC Irvine (2-11).

UC Davis’ Heather Bates hit a free throw then Mai hit a pair from the foul line to narrow the margin to 63-62 with 10 seconds on the clock. The Anteaters fouled immediately and Genevieve Costello stepped to the line hitting only the second of two free throws. With seven seconds on the clock, UCI brought the ball up the court, but a Forry baseline jumper missed as the buzzer sounded.
