Soccer teams finding success

The Fury, a girls’ Under-14 Gold All-Star team representing Region 55 (Huntington Beach), blanked the Blue Crush of Region 285 (San Diego), 1-0, on the final day of tournament play at the AYSO Hi-5 Holiday Invitational.

The weekend tournament concluded Sunday at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Sally Calle scored off a corner kick by Shannon Butler for the match’s lone score.

The Fury defense stood strong early in the match, with goalkeeper Kalie McCollough recording several saves, including one on a rolling dive. The defense of teammates Brittany Glassburner, Briana Montgomery, Whitney Palmer, Kelsey Pryor and Paulina Vo prevented any further offensive attacks mustered by the Blue Crush.

Kiana Demers, Lindsay Conlisk, Melissa Cooley, Paige Hulen and Kristin Nance also controlled the field and were instrumental in the win.

Natalie Gordon and Emily Locken, who did not play in the tournament final, also made key contributions for the Fury during early tournament action.

The Fury, coached by Ed Calle and assistant Cindy Cooley, finished in third place in the A/B pool. The Blue Crush finished in fourth place in the pool.

In other AYSO holiday tournament action:

The Region 55 (Huntington Beach) girls’ Under-12 Gold All-Star team won its division championship of the Hi-5 Holiday Invitational.

The team began the tournament with a 2-0 shutout of Quartz Hill and then followed that win with another shutout, this one a 3-0 decision over Region 143 (Huntington Beach/ Westminster).

On Sunday, they faced their stiffest tournament challenge against Pasadena and the teams played to a 1-1 tie.

In the championship game, Huntington and Mission Viejo were tied 1-1 and went into sudden-death overtime, where the locals posted the winning goal in a 2-1 victory.

The Region 55 U-12 All-Star players in the tournament were Drew Bradley, Anna Day, Sydnie Dutra, Sydney Marks, Jenna Peterson, Janae Phariss, Dana Rutkin, Alexa Vellanoweth, Taylor Goodban, Katie Gordon, Madison Koci, Mallory Koci, Diana Schwene, Jessica Johancsik and Kendyl Nowels. Coaches are Marcus Bradley and Rick Day.
