Edison 1, Newport Harbor 0NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors were missing four starters and dropped their Sunset League opener at home Thursday.

Newport is still on winter break and players were out of town. Goalkeeper Mary Giberson had surgery on a season-ending ankle injury on Thursday.

Goalkeeper Stephanie Castor and forward Lauren Devoy played well for the Sailors (5-6-2, 0-1), Coach Josh Brooks said.

Newport Harbor will play host to Fountain Valley Tuesday.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Western TournamentANAHEIM — Costa Mesa High split its first two games of pool play losing to Temecula Valley, 5-3, and defeating JSerra, 15-7, in the Western Tournament at Loara High Thursday.

Against Temecula Valley, Talhia Nuñez, Ashley Rendon and Abbie Dyvig each scored goals. Brittany Mucha made six saves.

Against Jserra, Nuñez led a balanced attack with three goals. Patricia Marty, Kassandra Afuang and Dyvig each had two goals. Andrea Beyaoju, Emily Speer, Liz Simpson and Mucha had one goal apiece.
