KLIPPERT EARNS HONOR

Amy Klippert, a Newport Harbor High product, was one of four athletes from the University of Michigan women’s soccer team to be named All-Great Lakes Region by Soccer Buzz magazine.

Klippert was named to the all-freshman team. She started all 20 games for Michigan, which went 9-7-6 and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Wisconsin Milwaukee on penalty kicks.

JORTH GOALS AID WINS

Newport Harbor High junior Clinton Jorth scored four combined goals to help the U.S. youth water polo team earn a pair of victories over New Zealand, Saturday and Sunday at Newport Harbor High.

Jorth, a first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I performer for the Sailors last fall, scored two goals in Saturday’s 8-4 triumph. He added two more — the American’s first goal and their last — in Sunday’s 12-2 victory.

HOWARD MISSES RECORD

UC Irvine product C.J. Howard finished the OC Marathon in three hours, 32 minutes, nine seconds Sunday.

Howard, who had his left leg amputated below the knee in 2003, was attempting to break the world record for amputees (3:04:16), held by Amy Winters.

It was the first martathon Howard, a former UCI cross country runner who now runs with a prosthetic device, has completed.
