By today, the Marina High boys’ basketball team could be the state record-holder for three-point baskets in a season.

The Vikings moved a step closer to attaining that milestone Monday when they recorded a 100-72 nonleague road victory over the Westminster Lions. They connected on 15 three-point baskets, giving them a national-leading 296 on the season.

The state record is 303 and was set during the 2000-01 season by University of Irvine. The national record is 382 by Alexandria Juniata Valley out of Pennsylvania during the 1996-97 season.

Marina had a chance Wednesday night to tie or break that mark in a home game against Esperanza. The outcome of that Sunset League contest was not available at press time.

The Vikings were a bit sloppy in the first half of Monday’s game against Westminster and only led the Lions, 40-37, at the half. But they put the game away with a 36-point outburst in the third quarter to score a runaway victory.

Marina’s pressure defense forced 37 turnovers in the game.

Mike Kinoshita led the Vikings in scoring, hitting eight three-point shots en route to 30 points. Garrett James’ all-around performance included 28 points, seven assists and eight steals.

Brendan Holmes scored 11 points and Dion Douglas had 10 points and four assists.

“Our guys did a great job of taking care of the ball in the second half and we were able to get our running game going,” Holmes said. “Westminster tried to take the threes away and that left the lane open for James and Douglas to drive and score in the key. That opened it up for our shooters to drain 10 threes in the second half.”

Previously, Marina was outgunned by Los Alamitos in the Sunset League opener for both schools, 106-87. Kinoshita and Troy Lewis each hit seven three-pointers and finished with 25 and 22 points, respectively.

Edison also dropped its Sunset opener, 49-41, at Newport Harbor. Corey Ferraro scored 19 points and brother Eric added 10 for the Chargers.

Huntington Beach began the Sea View League season with a 67-49 loss at Trabuco Hills. Nick Becker scored 17 points, Trevor Carroll had 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists and Zachary Kimber scored 10 points and had four rebounds for the Oilers.

In girls’ basketball:

Two-time Sunset League champion Marina began defense of its title by edging host Los Alamitos, 49-48. Alyssa Starkey scored 14 points and Michelle Walker added 10 for the Vikings.

Edison began Sunset play with a convincing 58-29 win at Newport Harbor. Victoria Lokhorst scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, Jacqueline Anderson posted 12 points and Simone Ibbotson scored seven points and had nine rebounds for the Chargers.

Defending Golden West League champion Ocean View suffered its first league loss in a 35-31 setback at Costa Mesa. Kelsey Harris and D.J. Butler each scored 10 points for the Seahawks.

In girls’ soccer:

Edison opened Sunset League play with a 1-0 victory against host Newport Harbor.

The Chargers dominated the first half and finally cracked the scoreboard when sophomore Alexa Enlow fought past two Sailors to score the only goal of the match.

Keepers Keenan Castillo and Cassie Becker teamed for the shutout and Kallie Ryker had several key defensive stops.

In girls’ water polo:

Huntington Beach rivals Edison and Marina played each other in the Sunset League opener, with the Chargers emerging with a 10-5 victory at the Newport Harbor High pool.

Sophomore Monique Wilson and freshman Danielle Warde each scored four goals and senior Joanna Tiplea scored twice to power Edison’s offense.

Wilson also had five steals, senior goalie Amelia Huss recorded 13 saves, junior Jamie Bee had three steals, senior Keeley McCormack overcame three ejections to come up with an assist and two steals, sophomore Shannon McCormack and freshman Carey Huss each had a steal and junior Nicole Kaprellian also contributed on defense.

“We had a strong showing in this game against Marina,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “Our defensive strategy paid off and our shooters were on target.

“We need to play tough and keep our minds focused as we prepare for our next league game against Esperanza.”

Before opening league play, Edison finished eighth at the Newport Harbor-Corona del Mar Holiday Cup.

The Chargers defeated Carlsbad (10-7) but dropped matches to eventual tournament champion Corona del Mar (13-3), Santa Barbara (9-6) and Poway (8-4).
