HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:Twice is nice for Sage Hill’s Dion

CERRITOS — Jackie Dion scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Sage Hill School girls’ soccer team to a 5-0 Academy League victory over host Whitney Thursday.

The Lightning (5-7-2, 2-1) also got goals from Ali McLaughlin, Jordan Team and Rachel Haber. Sara Montazami had two assists.

Goalie Hannah Macleod made two saves in the shutout.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Costa Mesa 1, Laguna Beach 1COSTA MESA — Ayla Medina scored to put the Mustangs ahead in the 60th minute, but the Breakers scored 10 minutes later in the Orange Coast League opener for both teams Thursday.

Costa Mesa (6-6-6, 0-0-1 in league) outshot Laguna, 14-3. Kalea Seanoa recorded two saves for the Mustangs.

Esperanza 7, Newport Harbor 3ANAHEIM — The Sailors fell down 2-0 in the first five minutes and could not rebound, losing the Sunset League contest on the road Thursday.

Alex Conley scored two goals and Crystal Mena added another for Newport (6-7-2, 1-2 in league).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Sage Hill 1, Whitney 0NEWPORT COAST — Jonathan Gordon scored in the 39th minute on an assist from Braden Ross for the Lightning’s seventh shutout and third straight Academy League win.

Jake Blitzer and Beau Caillouette had one save each for Sage (6-0-2, 3-0 in league).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Sage Hill 51, Whitney 40CERRITOS — Jamie McGee had team-highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Lightning to an Academy League victory Thursday at Whitney.

Connor Rose had 13 points. Nick Witte added nine points, five assists and five steals for Sage (9-9, 2-1 in league).

Esperanza 69, Newport Harbor 4NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors’ Josh George scored a 14-3 win at 135 pounds, recording the only points of the night for Newport in a Sunset League match at Newport Harbor High Thursday.

Sailors heavyweight Brian Beaudette lost 3-2 in overtime to Esperanza’s Casey Keisling, in a rematch of Saturday’s Estancia tournament title match that Beaudette won.

Laguna Hills 72, Corona del Mar 3LAGUNA HILLS — Max Prescott collected the Sea Kings’ lone win in dramatic fashion during a Pacific Coast League match Thursday.

He scored a takedown with 2.9 seconds left to beat Abel Ramirez, 6-4, in the heavyweight division.
