San Clemente Rotary TournamentSAN CLEMENTE — Newport Harbor High senior Brian Beaudette defeated San Clemente’s Alex Evers, 4-3, to win the heavyweight division title at the 28-team tourney Saturday.

Beaudette, who won the Estancia New Year Classic Jan. 6, protected the 4-3 lead with a minute left, keeping Evers down and preventing an escape or reversal.

In the quarterfinals, Beaudette exacted revenge with a 3-1 win over Corona del Mar’s Max Prescott, to whom he had lost earlier in the season.

Beaudette beat San Clemente’s Josh Travers, 4-0, in the semifinals. Beaudette opened the tournament recording a pin on Buena Park’s Aldo Guerrero in 35 seconds.

Prescott finished third in the tournament. Newport Harbor’s Josh George (135-pound division) finished seventh with a 2-2 record.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 50, Westminster 48WESTMINSTER — Senior Jennifer Courtney hit two free throws with 27 seconds left to a cap a 5-0 run that led the Mustangs to the nonleague win Saturday.

Courtney scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Junior Kathy Trinh led Costa Mesa (10-10) with 12 points on six-for-seven shooting.

Senior Nikki Brannon and junior Jasmine Werdel grabbed nine rebounds each. Junior Michelle Figueroa contributed seven assists for the Mustangs, who trailed, 48-45, with 90 seconds left.

Costa Mesa will play at Laguna Beach Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Rachel Haber, Hannah Macleod, Emily Webb and Kara Percival scored one goal each for Sage Hill (7-7-2, 4-1 in league).

Haber, Percival, Jackie Dion and Erica Farris contributed one assist each.

First-half goalie Lauren Neal had two saves.
