National Junior BasketballNewport-Mesa Trojans 50, Huntington Beach Rebels 32: Garrett Kerr scored a team-high 13 points for the Trojans in their win on Jan. 7. Danny Borg-Sundstrom and Jason Cernius each added eight points, and Brandon Huang had seven. Zach Morton, T.J. Danner and Ryan Grable all played well on defense and had a combined 22 rebounds for the Trojans.

Division I boys

Newport-Mesa Trojans 35, Manhattan Beach Mustangs 30: Jason Cernius had a team-high 12 points, including a clutch 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to help clinch the victory. Brandon Huang had seven points, and Garrett Kerr and T.J. Danner (16 rebounds) each added five points. Ryan Grable contributed on defense with three steals and a blocked shot, and Zach Morton added 10 rebounds.

Bruins 43, Wildcats 22: The Bruins improved to 4-2 with the win on Jan. 21. Taylor Wildman led all scorers with 12 points and eight steals for the Bruins, while Billy MacDonald added seven points and eight rebounds. Andrew McCormack manned the paint and brought down 12 rebounds while totaling eight points.

The Wildcats played hard in defeat and were led by Tanner Trauthen’s 11 points, Armon Alaghband’s five points and Ron Ayzin’s four points.

Waves 41, Red Storm 39: In a highly competitive battle, the Waves remained undefeated with a close win over the Red Storm on Jan. 21. The Waves were paced by Adam Spies with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Dylan Pievac hit a running shot to tie the score in regulation and Max Carpenter sealed the win, hitting two free throws with just seconds remaining. Alex Turney, Jake Arnett, Garrett Keillor and Shawn Farsai all played well in the win.

The Red Storm were led by the strong play of Wyeth Rietveld, Zach Asdourian, Jake Comer, Matt LeValley and Zach Gayer.

Spartans 61, Tigers 35: The Spartans improved to 5-1 while taming the Tigers in the win. The Spartans were led by the stellar play of Cody Caldwell, who led all scorers with 22 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Kyle Orton added 12 points and Keaton Phillips, Daniel Degree and Henri Crockett all played well in the big win. The Tigers played tough throughout and were paced by leading scorers Austin Mahaffey with 14 points and Justin Ruffalo with 12 points.

Sixth-grade boys

Newport-Mesa Sailors 44, Tustin All-Stars 35: The Sailors jumped out to a 23-2 lead after the first quarter and cruised from there on Jan. 14. Blake Grable and Kris Picarelli led the Sailors in scoring with 11 and eight points, respectively. Max Stone had seven points and Chris Okey added five.

Rounding out the offense, James Newman, Connor Kelly and Drew Olson each had four points and Nick Hanna added two. Newman and Kelly each had five steals to lead the Sailors’ smothering defense, while Okey and Olson played a strong inside game.

Division III

Newport-Mesa Huskies 45, Bears 37: Jake Hastings and Riley Gaddis led the Huskies in their win on Jan. 14. Hastings scored 14 points (all in the second half) and had seven rebounds, Gaddis had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Mario Nark (nine points), Chad Redfearn and Jack Tomei (five points each) rounded out the Huskies’ scoring. Strong defenders Parker Chase and George MacCabe had five and four rebounds, respectively, for the team.

The Bears played especially aggressively at the end of the game, led by their high scorer Austin Percy, Max Stanley and Grady Kimme.

AYSO Area Q

Region 97

Newport Gold 1, North Irvine 1: Newport Gold showed solid defensive play in its Area Q all-stars tie on Jan. 13. Elyssa Barnett, Sara Hamilton, Jamie Darling, Caroline Johnson, Selena Schroeder all played great first-half defense when North Irvine was controlling the action. Newport came out stronger in the second half, tying the game on Stephanie Joyce’s goal in the third quarter.

Newport Gold 5, Costa Mesa 0: Newport Gold controlled the midfield with the solid play of Michelle Brooks, Brenda Torres, Gina Scholey, Gabi Parisi, Sara Bradbury, Taylor Harrison and Caroline Johnson. Gigi Light, Stephanie Joyce and Britney Myers created several scoring opportunities, but the game remained scoreless until late in the second quarter when Myers blasted a goal from the left wing. Myers added a second goal midway through the third quarter, which was followed by a goal from Joyce.

Scholey and Torres added goals in the fourth quarter. Newport Gold’s defense of Selena Schroder, Elyssa Barnett, Sara Hamilton, Jamie Darling played solid throughout the game to secure the shutout.

Girls under-10 Gold all-stars

Kekai Whitford opened the Breakers’ scoring in the first quarter, and Toni Holland added two goals in the second quarter. Lauren Loucks’ third-quarter goal gave the Breakers an insurmountable 4-1 lead.

Newport Beach Breakers 4, Costa Mesa 1:

Strong defensive play from Jordan Blanchfield, Grace Clemence and Holly Clemence kept the Breakers in attack mode the entire game.

Newport Beach Breakers 5, N. Irvine 1: Kekai Whitford again opened the scoring with three first-half goals. Toni Holland added a goal and Peyton Espley-Jones added a score in the third as the Breakers cruised to victory. Emily Goltz was solid in goal and Lindzy Konrad showed good skill at halfback.

Newport Beach Breakers 2, Tustin 0: In a battle of undefeated squads, Gigi Woodall broke a scoreless tie on Kekai Whitford’s cross, giving the Breakers a 1-0 halftime lead. Emma Griffith scored a fourth-quarter goal to put the Breakers up, 2-0, and they held on. Once again, Jordan Blanchfield, Grace Clemence and Holly Clemence led a stingy Breakers defense.

The Breakers, a girls’ under-9 team playing in the under-10 division, leads the standings with a 3-0 record.

AYSO Region 97

Girls Under-10 all-stars

Corona del Mar Falcons 3, Yorba Linda Shockers 1: Forwards Brenna Currey and Katherine Hess, along with midfielder Ally Hadfield, scored for the Falcons in their Jan. 20 win. Anneliese Johansson assisted on the goals with a strong presence at center forward, as did speedster Arabella Watkins. Brooke Beyrooty had two big saves while playing goalie. Sweepers Julia Mouchawar and Payton Carter kept the pressure on the Shockers, as did tenacious midfielder Brooke Schweitzer.

Abigail Klein, Lauren Kobayashi and Madison Binder pushed the ball out of Falcons’ territory with their strong defense.
