Solar lights for sculptures

The commission approved the idea of solar lighting to illuminate three sculptures on a trial basis.

The three sculptural elements suggested were Jerry Rothman’s “In Central Park,” located in Heisler Park; Cheryl Ekstrom’s “Deer Warrior,” located in Jahraus Park off Cliff Drive and No. Coast Highway; and Larry Gill’s “North Wave, South Wave,” at Forest Ave. and So. Coast Highway.

Cultural Arts Manager Sian Poeschl distributed information about several varieties of solar lighting to the commissioners, who discussed their respective merits and disadvantages.

Poeschl said that the lighting wouldn’t be seen from nearby residences at any of the locations and required no electricity.

The commission unanimously approved the concept; Poeschl and Commissioner Dora Wexell will work on further details and an application to the Planning Commission.

No music in Riddle Field park

The commission unanimously approved a tentative calendar for this year’s Bluebird Park concert schedule.

The proposed lineup is varied, with musical genres ranging from Celtic to reggae.

Poeschl noted that no concert will be held this year in Riddle Field, which doesn’t offer an adequate electricity source and has no stage.

Sunset concerts in June approved

The commission discussed and unanimously approved a new program for four musical performances at Main Beach’s cobblestone area on Fridays at sunset in June.

Commissioner Pat Kollenda said the program was Poeschl’s idea and that the “sunset serenades” would feature solo musicians with light amplification, barely audible over the sound of the waves.

“We want visitors’ experience to be uniquely Laguna,” Poeschl said.

Library benches to be dedicated

The new artist-designed benches at the public library will be dedicated at the First Thursdays Art Walk March 1.
