WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 96,FULLERTON — Senior Kelly Schmidt had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday at Hope International.

Schmidt was seven of seven from the field for Vanguard (15-0, 10-0 in conference).

Junior Jessica Richter added 18 points and eight steals, and senior Lacey Burns had 17 points for the Lions, who held the Royals to just 26.5% shooting.

Junior Melissa Cook had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench for Vanguard, which received 11 points and eight rebounds from senior center Rachel Besse. Besse netted five of seven field-goal attempts.

It was the 48th straight regular-season victory for Coach Russ Davis’ Lions, ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division I.

Jasmine Nault had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Hope International (8-11, 3-8), but Vanguard held all of her teammates to five points or less.

Vanguard begins the second half of GSAC on Saturday, when it plays host to Fresno Pacific at 2:30 p.m.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, BYU 3IRVINE — The Anteaters improved to 1-1 in nonconference play Thursday at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

UC Irvine took two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. In the No. 1 match, UCI seniors Mustafa Ulukan and Aaron Yovan defeated BYU’s James Ludlow and Dominik Kaufhold, 9-7.

UCI juniors Andrei Radulescu and Alex Sundling defeated BYU’s Cassidy Mears and Cale Planck, 8-5, in the No. 2 match.

UCI went ahead 3-1 after Ulukan’s 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles, and Yovan’s 7-5, 6-4 win over Ludlow at No. 1 singles.

Junior Victor Lamm clinched UCI’s victory with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over BYU’s Christian Hand at No. 3 singles.

UCI returns to action on Feb. 4, when it plays host to Santa Clara at 1 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Hope International 69,FULLERTON — Dennis Heenan had a game-high 19 points, but the Lions were outscored, 10-5, in overtime of the Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday at Hope International.

Kevin Dalafu had 16 points for Vanguard (5-14, 2-8 in conference).

Brian Roberts added nine points and two three-pointers off the bench for the Lions, who also had three three-pointers from Heenan and two each from Dalafu and Greg Gusiff.

Pablo Lockhart had a team-high 18 points for the Royals (4-17, 2-9).

Vanguard plays host to Fresno Pacific on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
