Cuesta 2, Orange Coast 1SAN LUIS OBISPO — After taking a one-run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Pirates couldn’t hold on as they allowed two runs, the game-winner coming in the ninth on a suicide squeeze play with the bases loaded to lift host Cuesta College in the season opener Friday.

With one out and against OCC reliever Serrin Jarvi (0-1), Brandt Renstrom delivered a bunt to score Brad Bauer as Cuesta took the first game of a three-game series, which resumes today at noon.

OCC starter Keith Demorgandie and Cuesta starter Jason Roenicke were solid. Demorgandie pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up seven hits and striking out four. Roenicke went the distance in the win, allowing one run, no walks and seven hits to go with four strikeouts.

In the top of the eighth, Halston Barcelo led off with a single to right field. Two batters later, he scored on Cory Olson’s single to center, putting OCC ahead, 1-0. Olson went twofor three with an RBI.

Cuesta tied the game, 1-1, with two outs on Jarvi’s wild pitch.

After the three-game series against Cuesta, the Pirates will have their home opener against Western Nevada Thursday at 2 p.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 6, UC Irvine 1MALIBU — Junior Becky Bernhard upset No. 22 Bianca Dulgheru, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 1 singles match to give the Anteaters their lone win in the nonconference match Friday afternoon at Pepperdine.

UC Irvine sophomore Clare Fermin was involved in the only three-set match of the day, as Pepperdine’s Katia Sabate won, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.

The Waves won all three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead heading into singles. For UC Irvine, senior Jayme Hu and sophomore Ali Borowicz nearly defeated Pepperdine’s Anete Bandere-Carolina Raba tandem that won, 8-7 (11-9), at No. 3 doubles.

Eva Dickes and Sylvia Kosakowsi defeated Bernhard and Fermin, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.

The Anteaters (2-1) will play host to San Francisco in a nonconference match today at 11 a.m.
