Orange Coast 5, Cuesta 4SAN LUIS OBISPO — Freshman catcher Gabe Cota went two for four with a homer and drove in the what turned out to be the game-winner to lead the Pirates in a nonconference game Saturday at Cuesta College.

The Pirates (1-1) survived another shaky outing from their bullpen, after sophomore right-hander Ryan Shopshire worked six-plus innings, allowing one earned run, four hits and three walks, while striking out eight. Shopshire earned the win, when reliever Serrin Jarvi, who allowed two runs in the ninth in Friday’s 2-1 loss, worked out of a jam after allowing one run in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Cota belted a solo homer in the fifth that made it 3-0 and Nick Rokowitz later whacked a homer in the inning to put the Pirates up, 4-0.

Halsten Barcelo hit a two-run dinger to open the scoring in the second.

OCC had seven hits and did not commit an error, while Cuesta (1-1) had two miscues.

Coach John Altobelli’s Pirates are scheduled to complete the three-game series today at 11 a.m., when sophomore Keith Rizor gets the starting nod. Rizor sat out last season with an arm injury after going 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA for OCC in 2005.
