Local volleyball team on to Jr. Olympics

The Surf City boys’ 16 Gold volleyball team earned a bid to the upcoming Junior Olympics Volleyball Championships by winning the Bronze level title at the National Invitational Tournament last weekend.

The team, coached by Barry Sohl, competed in a tournament at the Anaheim Sports Center that drew more than 100 youth teams from throughout the U.S.

The Junior Olympics Volleyball Championships tournament will be held July 7 to 12 in Atlanta.

Surf City, just one of 10 teams nationally to receive a bid to the Junior Olympics tournament, includes Charlie Condron, Andrew Murillo, Ryan Sharpe, Dan Guthorn, Rob McKinley, Adam Westmoreland, Jeff Monteros, Aaron Gerardi, Matt McCoy, Dillon Auxier, Jimmy Torremeo, Chris Trefzger and Grant Bell.

Under-10 Division

HB Chaos, a Gold All-Star team out of Region 56, capped a successful season with a third-place finish at the Area 11K tournament.

The third-place finish followed a runner-up finish at the Costa Mesa Classic held over the New Year’s weekend.

Chaos advanced to the Area 11K semifinals by defeating regions 5, 55, 1335 and 517, in addition to playing Region 143 to a tie.

Throughout the tournament, the Chaos offense was led by top scorers Logan Steinle, Jack Kerins and Brendon Vu. The trio combined to score 25 goals. Also netting goals were Grant Mooney, Devin Lahtinen, Calum Colbert, Gavin Kirkreit and Daniel Schulze.

Kerins, Kirkreit, Schulze and Vu also led the team in assists.

The team defense was anchored by keepers Dallas Syfert and Jacob Capps and defenders Christian Contreras and Connor Venanzi.

HB Chaos is coached by Rich Kirkreit and Dan Kerins.

Girls

Under-12 Division

Red, White and Doom of Region 55 collected a pair of wins in Area 11K tournament play Saturday by defeating the Slammers (Region 56), 4-1, and the Spurs (Region 57), 3-1.

In the win over the Slammers, Caroline Fowler scored on a breakaway in the second half to break a scoreless tie. That goal was followed moments later by a score from defender Kendyl Nowels on a penalty kick. It was the first career goal for Nowels.

Forward Hannah Higginson scored the third goal and Fowler completed the scoring for Red, White and Doom with her second goal of the match.

Halfbacks Devon Graber and Cassidy Novkov keyed the first-half rush by Red, White and Doom and Tana Moore helped protect the net.

In the 3-1 win over the Spurs, Red, White and Doom scored successive goals off of corner kicks. The first was put into the net by midfielder Dana Conlisk, the other by Higginson.

Striker Grace Khoury scored the third goal.

Simone Corkett, Afton Siegel, Regan Shaver and Kayla Winsatt also turned in strong performances.

Red, White and Doom enters the final weekend of the tournament Saturday in third-place in the division playoffs.

In boys’ club soccer action

The Wolfpack Under-10 boys’ club soccer team earned finalists medals by finishing runner-up in its division at the 13th annual Orange County United Extreme Invitational.

The tournament marked the first time since November that the squad had competed.

In their first match, Wolfpack jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead on Arsenal Futbol Club and scored an eventual 7-2 victory. Connor Gordon, Cooper Kossick, Jake McKinley and Walker Thurston all scored for Wolfpack. Other key contributions came from Max Simon, Daniel Neff, Devin Anderson, Daniel Klemm, Ryan Priest, Hunter Kling and goalie Teddy Stuka.

Wolfpack then defeated San Clemente, 5-1. Gordon, Kossick and McKinley combined to score the five goals.

In a semifinal match, Wolfpack defeated the Hawks of Temecula, 5-1.

In the division final, Wolfpack faced Silver Elite Stampede Black of Chino Hills and the Stampede posted a 5-2 victory.

Wolfpack goals came on a penalty kick by Daniel Neff and a goal by Gordon.

Wolfpack, coached by Jeff Schofield, will compete this weekend at the State Cup in Lancaster.
