Gathering to celebrate young teen’s recoveryThe community is invited to celebrate the continued recovery of Cade Feitler, the Newport Beach boy who suffered severe brain injuries in a car accident two years ago.

Cade’s family and friends will gather to honor the 14-year-old boy’s persistent recovery since the crash left him unable to move or speak.

Through physical therapy and the encouragement of his peers, Cade has been able to recuperate some mobility and communication skills, and continues to work at it each day.

Reservations being held for free heart screeningA Newport Beach cardiac center is taking reservations for free heart screenings from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 14 so Newport-Mesa residents can find out if they are at risk for heart attack or stroke.

February is American Heart Month, and to help spread awareness, Pacific Coast Cardiology on West Coast Highway is offering free carotid ultrasounds and cardiac CAT scans.

The technology lets doctors and technicians look at detailed images of the heart and arteries and can detect blockages and other risk factors for heart disease. An appointment must be made to take advantage of the free tests.

Football fans asked to find designated driverThe California Highway Patrol is warning Super Bowl fans to choose a designated driver for those attending parties on Sunday.

Last year on Super Bowl Sunday, officers arrested 481 people on suspicion of driving under the influence statewide, while there were 242 alcohol-related collisions that day, according to a CHP news release.

The CHP is asking motorists to be extra vigilant this weekend. Those who suspect a drunk driver are asked to call 911 and provide a description of the vehicle, its license plate number, location and direction of travel.
