Vanguard 53, The Master’s 44SANTA CLARITA — Lacey Burns scored a game-high 20 points to help the top-ranked Lions overcome a 27-24 halftime deficit to earn their 51st straight regular-season victory Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Jessica Richter added nine points for the undefeated Lions (18-0, 13-0 in conference), who shot 33.9% from the field.

Indoor Invitational

Collins cleared five feet, 10 inches in the high jump for second place. Misiata finished second in the shot put with a mark of 44-6.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 9, Cal Baptist 6UC Irvine 11, Hartwick 4RIVERSIDE — Gianna Rossi scored seven goals, including four in the win over Cal Baptist, for the Anteaters in their season-opening victories at the Lancer Invitational at Cal Baptist Saturday.

UC Irvine’s Robyn Kaake scored three goals against Cal Baptist, while Alli Russell and Sarah Frost added two each in the win over Hartwick.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 7, San Diego State 0UC Irvine 7, Hawaii 0HONOLULU, Hawaii — The No. 55 Anteaters swept Hawaii Friday night and also blanked No. 35 San Diego State Saturday at the University of Hawaii.

In No. 1 singles, UCI’s Becky Bernhard defeated No. 69 Eliska Krausova, 5-7, 6-4, 10-2.

BASEBALL

Cal 10, UC Irvine 4BERKELEY — Bryan Petersen, Matthew Morris and Jeffrey Cusick hit one home run each for UCI, but the Anteaters lost the nonconference game to the Bears, who scored six runs in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie Saturday.

Petersen went two for three with two RBIs, that came from his two-run homer in the second for UCI (1-1).

DeAnza 6, Orange Coast 5COSTA MESA — The Pirates caught the Dons, 5-5, with a two-run eighth, but dropped the nonconference game after DeAnza’s run in the ninth Saturday.

Mike Ferraro, who came off the bench, went two for two with a run scored for OCC (2-3), while Halston Barcelo was two for five with two RBIs.

Luis Cardenas led the Dons (3-2) going three for four with three RBIs, the latter coming in the ninth after his single to center drove in the game-winning run.

Vanguard (1-2) outhit Claremont, 8-5, yet also left eight runners stranded to the Athenas’ five. Lions pitcher Melissa Forrester struck out seven, allowing five hits and one earned run in 6 2/3 innings.
