BASEBALL

CAL 6, UC Irvine 0

BERKELEY — Some fifth-inning wildness ruined what until then was a strong outing by Anteaters’ starting pitcher Dylan Axelrod Sunday at Evans Diamond.

The victory gives the Golden Bears two wins in the three-game nonconference series that opened the season for both teams.

Axelrod, a senior right-hander, had held the Bears scoreless until two outs in the fifth. He put two runners aboard, via walks, then hit a batter with two outs to bring up Josh Satin, who doubled in three runs for all the hosts would need.

Axelrod allowed four hits and two walks in five innings.

Three Cal pitchers combined to surrerender only six hits, including starter Alex Rollin, who went 5 1/3 to earn the victory.

Tyler Vaughn, a junior third baseman, went two for four with two doubles for the Anteaters.

Sophomore shortstop Ben Orloff was two for three.

UCI (1-2) left eight runners on, while Cal (2-1) stranded only three.

Matt Morris and Bryan Petersen also had singles for the Anteaters.

Wes Etheridge allowed three hits and two runs in three relief innings for the visitors.

The Anteaters play their first home game Friday night at 6 against Loyola Marymount.
