PEEK AT THE WEEK:Costa Mesa girls eye crown

This week in the local sports scene starts out with a bang. Newport-Mesa high school teams are hoping the week ends with a boom.

The Costa Mesa High boys’ and girls’ basketball teams start it off with some key Orange Coast League games tonight at Calvary Chapel.

The Costa Mesa boys need a win over the Eagles at 7:30 to get back into contention for the league title. After losing to Laguna Beach, 63-56, on Friday, the Mustangs (16-8, 4-3 in league) fell out of first place and are now behind the Breakers and Calvary Chapel, both are at 5-2 in league.

The Costa Mesa girls will play for the league title tonight at 6. The teams have split this season.

The Mustangs (15-10, 6-1 in league) are looking to win their first league crown since 1998.

League titles and CIF Southern Section playoff berths will be on the line during the the final week of the regular season.

Here’s a look at some more big games this week:

  • High school boys’ basketball, Newport Harbor at Marina, Tuesday at 7 p.m.
  • The Sailors need to win to secure a CIF playoff berth. Newport Harbor (13-8, 4-4) is tied for second in the Sunset League with Marina (16-8, 4-4).

    Coach Larry Hirst’s Sailors won the first meeting at Newport Harbor, 65-57, Jan. 17.

    Newport Harbor won its first four league games, but is now trying to end a four-game skid.

  • High school boys’ soccer, Costa Mesa at Estancia, Wednesday at 3 p.m.
  • The teams have split in Orange Coast League play with the Mustangs pulling off a stunning 2-1 win last week. Estancia is in position to win the league title, but Costa Mesa wants to play spoiler.

  • College basketball, UC Irvine at UC Santa Barbara, Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
  • The Anteaters (11-13, 5-5 in the Big West Conference) are looking for a rare road victory against the Gauchos (14-6, 5-2) in the first of UCI’s four straight road games.

    UCI is clinging to the No. 4 spot in the Big West with four conference games left.

    The top four in the conference get a first-round bye in the Big West Tournament.

    UCI lost to UCSB, 64-59, Jan. 6 at the Bren Events Center.

  • College baseball, Loyola Marymount at UC Irvine, Friday at 6 p.m.
  • The Anteaters, who dropped two of three in their season-opening series at Cal, will try to win their home opener. It’s the first of three games in as many days against the Lions, with the first two at Anteater Ballpark. Saturday’s game is also at 6 p.m.

    On Sunday, the Anteaters visit LMU for the 1 p.m. finale of the nonconference series.
