UCI’S NED RECOGNIZED

UC Irvine senior Angie Ned, who averaged 24.5 points and 11 rebounds in games against Pacific and Cal State Northridge last week, has been named Big West Conference Co-Player of the Week in women’s basketball.

Ned recorded her first two career double-doubles in the two road games, Thursday at Pacific and Saturday at Northridge.

She had 29 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in the Anteaters’ 62-54 win over Pacific in Stockton.

Ned added 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in an 80-63 loss at Northridge.

Ned also shot 90% from the free-throw line in the two games.

She shares the honor with Cal Poly’s Megan Harrison.

CAL’S MAZURA LAUDED

Cal senior defender Alivia Mazura, a Corona del Mar High product, was named Most Valuable Player at the Golden Bears’ women’s soccer banquet recently.

A third-team all-region selection by Soccer Buzz, Mazura was a leading factor in Cal posting 12 shutouts and an 0.69 goals-against average.

Mazura, who started all 21 games, also received the program’s Golden Bear award.

Cal was 12-5-5 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Cal defeated Dayton, 2-0, in the tournament’s opening round.

ERICKSON MAKES LIST

UC Irvine senior Blair Erickson has made the watch list for the third annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top Division I reliever before the NCAA Super Regionals.

Erickson, the Anteaters’ all-time saves leader with 41, is among 35 players, one of two from the Big West Conference, being considered.

The right-hander recorded 13 saves last season and is now eight away from tying the all-time national mark held by USC’s Jack Krawcyzk.

Last year, Erickson went 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings.

‘EATERS’ BERNHARD RANKED

UC Irvine junior women’s tennis player Becky Bernhard has been ranked No. 28 in the West Region in the FILA/ITA collegiate rankings.

Bernhard was 16-16 in singles in 2005-06 and was named first-team All-Big West Conference in singles. She began this season 5-1 in singles .
