WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 64, Santa Ana 50SANTA ANA — Courtney Ford had 20 points, eight rebounds and four three-pointers, helping the Pirates clinch the outright Orange Empire Conference title on Friday at Santa Ana College.

Devin Hundley had 10 points and six rebounds for OCC (26-3, 12-0 in conference), and Rachael Maulit had eight assists and four steals.

The Pirates, who have won 15 straight games, are ranked No. 4 in Southern California.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. StanfordIRVINE — Senior outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky had a team-high 13 kills for the Anteaters in a 30-28, 30-22, 30-22 Mountain Pacific Sports Conference sweep Friday night at UCI.

Freshman Cole Reinholm had 10 kills for the ‘Eaters (12-2, 7-2), ranked No. 2 in the country, and David Smith added nine kills and seven block assists. Aaron Harrell had eight kills and three service aces for UC Irvine, which outhit Stanford, .347 to .075, for the match.

Brian Thornton added 37 assists for UCI. Matt Ceran had a team-high nine kills for Stanford (1-12, 1-7).

The Anteaters play host to No. 13 Pacific tonight at 7 p.m. at Crawford Court.

Orange Coast def. El CaminoCOSTA MESA — Kevin Welch, a Corona del Mar High product, recorded 19 kills and Keith Thornton amassed 62 assists to lead the Pirates to a 30-28, 29-31, 23-30, 30-23, 15-12 nonconference win Friday.

Rick Schroeder and Brett Lessman each had 15 kills, while Stefan Broule contributed 14 kills for OCC (1-1). El Camino dropped to 0-2.

The Pirates will play at Santa Barbara Thursday at 6 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 80, Santa Ana 74SANTA ANA — Miguel Gonzalez, Steve Cornett and Diego Delgado scored 14 points each for the Pirates in an Orange Empire Conference game at Santa Ana College on Friday.

Cameron Wise added seven points and a team-high 11 rebounds for OCC (14-13, 5-4 in conference). Gonzalez had a team-high four three-pointers, part of 13 overall for the Pirates.

James Silvie scored a team-high 14 points for Santa Ana (21-8, 5-5).

OCC plays at Saddleback on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Vanguard 20, Bethany 1Vanguard 7, Bethany 0COSTA MESA — The Lions outscored visiting Bethany by a combined 27-1, easily sweeping a nonconference doubleheader Friday at Vanguard.

Vanguard (3-2) pounded out 13 runs in the first inning of Game 1, sending 17 batters to the plate against Bethany (1-5). The Lions cruised from there, the game ending in five innings.

Pitcher/designated hitter Jennifer Rynda, who pitched two innings of shutout ball for the win, went four for four with three doubles and six RBIs. Second baseman Jennifer Bergh added three hits and scored three times, and catcher Ashley Ocasio had three hits and three RBIs.

Rachel Bomgren, Jennifer Olvera and Noelle Navarette each had two hits for the Lions.

In the second game, Kelsey Boyer threw a complete-game shutout, striking out five in her first win of the year.

Rynda’s two-RBI single put Vanguard up, 2-0, in the second inning. The Lions added single runs in the fourth and fifth and three more runs in the sixth, highlighted by RBI hits from Melissa Forrester and Bergh (two for three).

Sarah Howe and Rynda each had two hits for the Lions, who play at Cal State San Marcos today at 12 p.m.
