COSTA MESA CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP

Here are some items the council considered Tuesday.

FUTURE PRIORITIES

Council members voted unanimously to boost the priority level of several projects on their long-term to-do list, which means the city will try to get them done sooner. Those projects included exploring use of flood control channels for bike and pedestrian trails, upgrading lights and reconfiguring fields at TeWinkle school, considering use of artificial turf on athletic fields and studying the extension of the Costa Mesa Freeway (55).

WHAT IT MEANS

Those projects will be a higher priority than they were. The council also decided, in a 4-1 vote with Councilwoman Katrina Foley dissenting, to meet with the parks and recreation commission and planning commission to talk about field use, green building and other topics.

SENIOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The council rejected a proposal by Councilwoman Katrina Foley to form a committee that would have addressed senior issues such as transportation and housing. The Costa Mesa Senior Center has had an advisory committee in the past and may be reorganizing it soon, but it only deals with programs and other issues to do with the center.

The vote split, 3-2, with Foley and Councilwoman Linda Dixon opposing the decision to receive and file a report on the committee and not go forward with it, essentially killing Foley’s proposal. Mayor Allan Mansoor said he doesn’t see the need for a separate committee, since the senior center will be forming one and seniors can come to council meetings or communicate their ideas in other ways.

WHAT IT MEANS

A committee to discuss issues affecting the city’s senior citizens will not be formed.

WHAT THEY SAID

“A number of our committees do have seniors on them already and they do give a lot of good input,” Councilman Eric Bever said.
