LOS ANGELES — Nine innings, a combined 39 hits and 12 pitchers weren’t enough to decide this nonconference game, which was called due to darkness Sunday and will not be resumed.

The Lions had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth when the umpires halted the game at four hours, 45 minutes.

UCI freshman catcher Francis Larson went four for five — all doubles — with five RBIs, to lead a season-high 18-hit attack for the Anteaters (3-2-1).

Junior Taylor Holiday was four four six with three RBIs, including a two-run homer, while UCI teammates Matt Morris and Sean Madigan were both two for five with two RBIs.

Morris also belted a solo homer for the visitors, who erased deficits of 5-1 and 6-2 to tie it in the fourth. UCI then scored four to take a 10-6 lead in the fifth, but the Lions (3-3-1) answered with a nine-run fifth.

UCI scored five in the seventh to pull even and the bullpens held it there.

UCI starter Dylan Axelrod allowed six earned runs on eight hits in two innings. Thomas Calahan (2 1/3 ), Eric Pettis and Blair Erickson combined for four relief innings without allowing an earned run.

UCI, which won the first two games of the series, visits Houston for a three-game series beginning Friday.
