SURFING SOAPBOX:Drawing lines in the sand

In response to some of those who wrote to the paper about my column supporting the new lifeguard stands, it’s true a good reporter does their research and checks with both sides. However, a columnist writes his opinion.

Some might want to do their research about the difference between a columnist and a reporter before making claims that are incorrect.

Some state that there has been misrepresentation in what has been said and written about the lifeguard stands.

But next time, someone might want to think about putting an asterisk next to her boast that “I was a lifeguard for 12 years.”

Someone who has made a living in the ocean for the last 18 years, as I have, knows the difference between an ocean lifeguard and a lake and/or pool lifeguard — which is what this person was for 11 of those 12 years.

Isn’t that like knowing the difference between a reporter and a columnist?

It’s ironic that some people who oppose these new lifeguard stands are the same ones who live in a building cemented on top of a bluff in north Laguna.

So, if we were talking about your home being built on the beach — or should I say, cliff — instead of a lifeguard stand, would you still be opposed?

Speaking of temporary lifeguard stands, maybe someone can check with our city council, or better yet, our city manager, and see if he might budget enough money for the lifeguards to buy these type of temporary stands.

While you’re at it, also ask if they can budget enough money for city workers to build them and break them down; because last time I checked this wasn’t in the job description of a lifeguard — that is to protect and/or save lives.

Laguna Beach has always been known for it’s beauty from the beach to the hills, so why is it OK for our city to dig into hillsides and yet not give the lifeguards the proper stands that they need to protect our beaches?

If you think it’s because these lifeguard stands will ruin the beauty — hogwash.

Yes, it might take a little getting used to, but what in this town that has been built here in the last 10 years hasn’t?

As for telling me that perhaps I should move to LA, that’s like telling Santa Clause he should relocate to the desert.

Peace.
