Vanguard 10, Concordia 8COSTA MESA — Sophomore Richard Jessup pitched five innings in relief, earning his first win of the season as the Lions topped previously unbeaten Concordia on Thursday in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Vanguard.

Derek Craddock was three for five with two runs scored for Vanguard (2-2, 2-2 in conference). Jason Machado had a pinch-hit, three-run double for the Lions in their six-run sixth inning. Luke Iverson and Daniel Black also scored twice for Vanguard in the win over the Eagles (7-1, 3-1), ranked No. 11 in NAIA.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 7, Palomar 2COSTA MESA — OCC No. 1 singles player Jaleh Mazaheri, a sophomore, won in singles and teamed with Heather Morton for a doubles win in a nonconference match Thursday at OCC.

Evelyn Wallace and KD Doran both also notched singles wins and teamed for a doubles victory for the Pirates (3-0), the defending state champions.

OCC opens Orange Empire Conference play on Tuesday at 2 p.m., at home against Saddleback.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Santa BarbaraSANTA BARBARA — Kevin Welch, a Corona del Mar High product, recorded 13 kills to help lead the Pirates to a 30-16, 30-22, 30-23 nonconference win Thursday.

Matt Knutson and Stefan Brule added nine kills each for OCC (2-1).

MEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 9, Palomar 0SAN MARCOS — Jon Kroopf, Pat Lam, David Stacy, Charlie Nguyen, Andy Ong and Kevin Kordestani won in singles for the Pirates in their nonconference win Thursday.

Orange Coast remained undefeated at 4-0.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State Fullerton 77,IRVINE — Senior guard Angie Ned scored a game-high 22 points for the Anteaters in their Big West Conference loss Thursday at UCI.

Miranda Forry had 11 points and eight rebounds for UCI (6-20, 3-9 in conference). Stephanie Duda had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Anteaters.
