Newport-Mesa winter

A high-pressure front will continue to bless Costa Mesa and Newport Beach with balmy weather this weekend, with the National Weather Service predicting high temperatures in the low 70s today.

“We should see clear skies, dry air and warm temperatures,” said National Weather Service Ted Mackechnie. “It may be a little breezy at times.”

Sunday should be somewhat cooler, party cloudy with highs in the low 60s, culminating in a chance of rain that night, he said.

Yet when Sunday ends, so should the mild weather.

Those planning outdoor recreational activities over the weekend might want to schedule them earlier.

By President’s Day, there will be a 40% chance of rain, Mackechnie said.

The clear skies will be accompanied by rising surf Saturday, continuing through Tuesday, said Surfwatch forecaster Jon Warren. In Newport Beach, however, waves aren’t likely to be bigger than chest-high, he said.

Again, earlier may be better, Warren said, as winds will make the waves choppy Monday.

“With the straight onshore flow Monday, we’re going to see blown-out conditions,” he said.
