HUNTINGTON BEACH — Brian Beaudette (heavyweight division) earned third place and Josh George (135 pounds) placed fourth to qualify for the Masters tournament after their respective performances at the CIF Individual Coastal Division Tournament Saturday at Marina High.

It was the first time in Dominic Bulone’s eight years as Newport Harbor coach he had two Masters qualifiers in the same year.

Beaudette lost in the semifinals to John Glenn’s Juan Enriquez, who went on to win the championship. But Beaudette rebounded, defeating South Hills’ Alex Arias, 9-1, then topping La Mirada’s Bud Coit, 5-1, in the third-place match.

ALISO VIEJO — The Sailors ended their season at 10-9-4, losing to their former Sea View League counterpart in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Saturday.

The Wolverines (10-7-8) scored with about 17 minutes left, then again with seven minutes remaining.

“We had our chances, that’s for sure,” Newport Coach Ryan Hernandez said. “We tried to get players forward [after the Wolverines scored their first goal] and they scored again.”

Hernandez said he was pleased with the season.

“For us to be over .500 and to make the playoffs, that’s pretty sweet actually,” he said. “Our seniors were really good guys. They worked really hard and stuck together. They had a good attitude the whole way.”
