UC Irvine 11, Houston 5

HOUSTON — Sophomore designated hitter Tony Asaro hit a three-run home run in the third inning Sunday to give the Anteaters the lead for good and a sweep of the three-game nonconference series.

It was the first home run at UCI for Asaro, a Pepperdine transfer.

There were multiple offensive heroes for the winners (6-2-1), who rallied in all three games against the Cougars.

Sophomore shortstop Ben Orloff went three for four with three RBIs, while senior center fielder Matt Morris was three for four with two RBIs.

Senior Cody Cipriano also had three hits for the Anteaters, for whom junior leadoff man Taylor Holiday went two for five with one RBI.

Junior right fielder Bryan Petersen was two for four with an RBI and procured his team-leading seventh stolen base as part of UCI’s 14-hit attack.

In the series, the ‘Eaters scored 35 runs on 45 hits, including 10 doubles, three triple and three homers.

Junior Wes Etheridge worked 5 2/3 scoreless relief innings to earn his fourth win of the season, his second of the series. Etheridge, 4-0 this season, worked nine innings in the series, allowing four hits and one earned run, while walking one and striking out nine.

Morris was nine for 13 with four RBIs in the series, while Cipriano was seven fo 14 and Holiday was six for 15.

UCI Sunday starter Dylan Axelrod was knocked out in the second inning. He has now given up 14 earned runs and 14 hits in 8 1/3 innings in his three starts.

The Anteaters visit USC Tuesday at 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 6, UC Santa Barbara 1

GOLETA — Junior Becky Bernhard and sophomore Clare Fermin both won in singles and paired to win at No. 1 doubles to lead the Anteaters in the Big West Conference road match Sunday.

Berhard rallied to defeat Carina Bjornstrom, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while Fermin topped Clarlotte Scatliffe, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 3 singles.

Sophomore Heidi Kaloi and junior Jessica Broadfoot won at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, resepectively, then combined to post a win at No. 2 doubles for the Anteaters (7-2, 2-0 in conference).

UCSB fell to 3-3, 1-1.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Cal State San Bernardino 6

UC Irvine 6, UC Santa Barbara 3

GOLETA — The Anteaters swept two games Saturday at UCSB, including a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation clash with the Gauchos.

Senior Jackie Prine had four goals to lead the blowout of Cal State San Bernardino, which helped the No. 9 Anteaters improve to 7-1.

Senior Robyn Kaake and freshman Kat Plummer had two goals apiece against No. 12-ranked UCSB.

MEN’S SOCCER

Chivas USA 2, UC Irvine 1

IRVINE — The Major League Soccer franchise, featuring former Anteaters Cameron Dunn and Anthony Hamilton, prevailed in the exhibition Saturday night in front of 1,172 at Anteater Stadium.

Corey Attaway scored for the Anteaters.
