Things went pretty much as expected Saturday when Huntington Beach High took on visiting Mayfair in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division IA girls’ basketball playoffs.

The outmanned Monsoons offered little resistance to the 11th-seeded Oilers, who rolled to a 62-39 victory.

The win earned Huntington, now 21-5, a second-round date with fifth-seeded Valencia on Wednesday in Valencia. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The Oilers are co-champions of the Sea View League.

Mayfair was the fourth-place representative from the Suburban League.

“Things went pretty much to form, as I thought it would,” Huntington Coach Russell McClurg said. “The girls did a good job of executing the game plan and played solidly. We were able to establish [Jasmine Erving] early, too, and that set the tone.”

Junior center Erving dominated play inside and led all scorers with 27 points.

Sophomore forward Noelani Viloria, who McClurg said also “played really well,” contributed 15 points and six assists.
