UC Irvine 7, Utah 3

IRVINE — Ben Orloff, Cody Cipriano, Bryan Petersen, Zach Robinson and Tyler Vaughn each had two hits to help the Anteaters give third-year coach Dave Serrano his 75th career victory in nonconference action Friday.

Orloff, Cipriano, Petersen, Robinson, Matthew Morris and Sean Madigan had one RBI each for UCI (8-2-1), which won its fifth straight game. Corey Shimada (three hits) led Utah (2-9).

COSTA MESA — Freshman Kevin Welch had 25 kills and 11 digs and sophomore Trevor Holmes had 40 assists in the Pirates’ 28-30, 30-21, 30-21, 30-24 nonconference win Friday.

Rick Schroeder had 17 kills and Matt Knutson had 14 digs for the Pirates (5-1).

Big West Championships

LONG BEACH — UC Irvine junior Randall Tom won the 100-yard butterfly in 46.60 seconds for his second title that helped the Anteaters move into first place Friday at Belmont Plaza.

Tom’s time of 46.47 seconds in the prelims is the second fastest time in the country this season. Eddie Erazo broke the UCI and meet records in the 100 backstroke in 47.99 seconds. The 200 free relay team of Tom, Wil Wollam, Derek Hingeveld and Eric Reilly won the event in 1:19.82, breaking the UCI and meet records. Senior Mike Cohee won the 200 freestyle in 1:37.84.

The Big West Championships continue today.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Big West Championships

LONG BEACH — UC Irvine junior Chelsea Nagata won two events Friday and freshman Lyndsay DePaul broke school and meet records in the 400-yard individual medley in four minutes, 14.25 seconds Friday at Belmont Plaza.

Nagata won the 100 butterfly (53.35 seconds) for the third straight year and also won the 100 backstroke (54.80). Jackie Jones won the three-meter diving event with 273.75 points.

The UCI women are in third place. The Big West Championships continue today.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Hawaii 6, UC Irvine 5

IRVINE — The No. 4-ranked Rainbow Wahine earned the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation triumph Friday.

Hawaii (7-4, 5-2 in the MPSF) took a 2-0 lead and never trailed, as No. 9-ranked UCI fell to 7-2, 1-1.

Junior Lauren Machanis made 16 saves for the Anteaters.

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Aaron Yovan won in singles and doubles, but it wasn’t enough in this nonconference match Friday at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

Yovan defeated Nico Terrien, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Mustafa Ulukan to post an 8-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles.

UCI fell to 3-3 and LMU improved to 2-7.
