LOCAL ALL-STARS COMPETE

The AYSO Region 97 (Corona del Mar) girls’ under-12 gold all-star team, the Area Q champion, begins play today at the Section 11 tournament.

CdM, coached by Art Diaz and Vince Abbott, opens pool play today against Area E champion La Mirada at 9:15 a.m. at Griffith Middle School in Downey. CdM plays Area S champion Chula Vista at 1:30 p.m., and has another game Sunday at 12:45 p.m.

Should CdM win its pool, it will play in the championship game Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Team members Victoria Abbott, Asia Andry, Annika Borg-Sundstrom, Yasmeen Dandan, Megan Diaz, Natasha Fisker, Brittany Hanrahan, Madeline Hayward, Madison Hodgkins, Rachel Howes, Ashley Kayl, Alexandra Langel, Hannah Perry and Jenna Shapiro.

The CdM squad won the Area Q championship with a 1-0 victory over South Irvine on Feb. 10.

Section 11, one of three sections in Southern California, covers from the Los Angeles County line south to the Mexican border.
