MEN’S SWIMMING

Big West ChampionshipsLONG BEACH — The UC Irvine men’s swimming and diving team won the Big West Conference championship Saturday night at Belmont Plaza.

Junior Randall Tom, who won two individual events and was a part of four victorious relay teams, was named Male Big West Swimmer of the Year and the Anteaters’ Brian Pajer was named Big West Men’s Coach of the Year.

UCI won the men’s title with 820.5 points, easily over second-place UC Santa Barbara, which had 727.5 points. Junior Eddie Erazo won the 200-yard butterfly in one minute, 44.52 seconds, which was the eighth fastest in the nation this year and broke the meet record. Tom, along with Eric Reilly, Will Wollam and Mike Coheee won the 400 freestyle relay in 2:56.31, which broke the UCI and meet records.

Tom finished third in the 200 fly in 1:45.77.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Big West ChampionshipsLONG BEACH — Freshman Lyndsay DePaul won her third individual title of the meet to help UC Irvine wind up third in the conference’s swimming and diving finale Saturday at Belmont Plaza.

DePaul won the 200-yard butterfly in a school-record time of 1 minute, 59.30 seconds Saturday, which ranks No. 21 among the fastest in the nation this season.

Junior Jackie Jones won the one-meter diving competition for her second title of the meet with a total of 285.3 points.

UCI Junior Tanya Nielsen was second in the 100 freestyle (51.04, a school record).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 117, Biola 44COSTA MESA — Lacey Burns scored 24 points and was one of six Lions in double figures to lead unbeaten Vanguard, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, to its largest margin of victory this season in Big West Conference action Saturday.

Burns shot five for eight from three-point range to contribute to Vanguard’s 19-for-33 performance from beyond the arc. Jessica Richter added 20 points, Melissa Cook 16, Jaclyn Blied 14, Tiari Goold 13 and Kelly Schmidt 12, as the Lions (24-0, 19-0 in conference) nearly surpassed the school record for points (126).

Cook and Blied hit four three-pointers each and Goold was a perfect three for three from behind the three-point line. Goold, who had nine assists, was four of four from the field and two for two from the free-throw line.

Vanguard shot 37 of 55 from the field (67.3%) for the game to win its 57th straight regular-season game and 44th consecutive regular-season GSAC contest. Biola dropped to 10-18, 6-13.

The Lions close out the regular season Monday when they play host to Hope International at 5:30 p.m.

Long Beach City 4,COSTA MESA — The Pirates couldn’t hold a 3-0 lead and lost to the defending state-champion Vikings Saturday at OCC.

Catcher Chris Lum had two hits, scored a run and had an RBI for Orange Coast (8-6). Halston Barcelo was two for three with an RBI and Toby Alderete drove in the other Pirates run.

The Pirates play host to Chafey on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before opening Orange Empire Conference play at Fullerton on Thursday.

Vanguard 12, The Master’s 9COSTA MESA — Freshman center fielder Tyson Leighton ripped four hits, including two triples, in the first game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader that the Lions split on Saturday at Vanguard.

Vanguard (4-3, 4-3 in conference) scored five runs in each of the first two innings of Game 1, then survived an eight-run sixth inning by The Master’s College (6-9, 2-5). Lions catcher Adam Hastings was three for five with a home run and three RBIs, and Dustin Jones threw five shutout innings to improve to 2-0.

In the second game, Clinton Behrends and Jason Machado were both two for three for the Lions.

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor championshipsSEATTLE — UC Irvine sophomore Lauren Collins finished second in the pentathlon with a personal-best 3,963 points, Saturday.

Collins ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.86 seconds, cleared 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the high jump, put the shot 37-4, went 17-6 1/4 in the long jump and finished the 800 in 2:19.23.

Arizona State’s Jacquelyn Johnson won the event with 4,159 points.

UCI freshman Alisha Misiata finished ninth in the shot put (47-3 1/2 ) and 11th in the 20-pound weight throw (47-7 1/4 ).

UCI senior Tayler Cusick was 13th in the triple jump (37-6 1/2 ).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pacific Coast ClassicSAN DIEGO — Orange Coast College’s Jaleh Mazaheri, Evelyn Wallace, KD Doran and Mahtab Davalothgagh advanced to today’s singles title matches after winning in the semifinals of their respective divisions at San Diego Mesa Saturday.

Mazaheri defeated San Diego Mesa’s Cathy Puffelis, 6-2, 6-3 in Division I, Wallace scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jeanne DeGuzman of Cerritos in Division III, Doran swept San Diego Mesa’s Lisa Costa, 6-0, 6-0, in Division IV and Davalothgagh was nearly perfect with her 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ana Pinon of San Diego City in Division V.

In Division II, Riverside’s Katie Aja defeated the Pirates’ Heather Morton, 7-6, 1-6, 7-5. OCC’s Dian Pham won the consolation final in Division VI with a 10-0 win over Victor Valley’s Carol Johnson.

In doubles, the tandems of Mazaheri-Morton and Wallace-Doran advanced to today’s title matches in Division I and II, respectively.

UC Irvine 5, Pacific 2IRVINE — Inna Agababian, Heidi Kaloi, Jessica Broadfoot and Ali Borowicz won in singles to help the Anteaters to their fourth straight win in a Big West Conference match Saturday.

UCI (9-2, 4-0 in conference) also won twice in doubles. Becky Bernhard and Clare Fermin earned a point, as did the tandem of Borowicz and Jayme Hu.

SOFTBALL

Vanguard 8, Patten 0Vanguard 8, Patten 0COSTA MESA — Rachel Bomgren had three hits and scored twice to lead the Lions to the win in the first game that ended in the fifth inning and Noelle Navarette was three for three in Vanguard’s victory in the nightcap that ended in the sixth Saturday in nonconference action.

Sarah Howe and Jennifer Rynda had two hits apiece in each game for the Lions (11-4). April Glenn, Jennifer Bergh, Jennifer Olvera finished with two hits each. Pitchers Melissa Forrester and Keley Boyer both had two-hit shutouts.

Biola outscored the hosts, 9-2, in overtime to improve to 15-14, 9-10 in conference.

Vanguard (6-22, 3-16) was led by Greg Scott who had 14 points, six assists and five rebounds.

TRACK AND FIELD

Rossi RelaysCLAREMONT — Vanguard University’s Aze Perkins qualified for the NAIA Indoor Nationals with his performances Friday at Concordia College, while teammate Jason Valenzuela did the same Saturday at the Rossi Relays at Claremont-McKenna College.

Perkins, a freshman, qualified in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing first with a school-record time of 8.17 seconds, currently ranked No. 4 in the NAIA.

The rest of the Lions competed Saturday at Claremont-McKenna. Valenzuela, also a freshman, cruised to a fifth-place finish in the 3,000 meters in a personal-best time of 8 minutes, 40.37 seconds. Junior Stewart Ramsey posted a pole vault personal-best of 14-3 1/2 , finishing tied for third.

Junior Travis Hartanov finished 13th in the 3,000 meters in a personal-best time of 8:55.55, while freshman Mike Hartanov posted a personal-best of 9:11.13 (23rd). The men’s 4x400 meter relay team of Danny Thomas, Joe Chittim, Perkins and Zach Powel finished seventh in a season-best 3:23.25.

On the women’s side, sophomore Grace Jepngetich set a school-record time of 10:01.14 in the 3,000 meters, finishing third and also with an automatic qualifying time for nationals. Next up for the Lions is the NAIA Indoor Nationals, March 8-10 in Johnson City, Tenn.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine InvitationalIRVINE — The No. 9-ranked Anteaters split their two matches Saturday, beating No. 8 San Diego State, 8-7, before falling to No. 1 UCLA, 11-7.

Julia Fancher had three goals for UCI (8-3) against San Diego State.

Jessica Lewis added two goals for UCI and Lauren Machanis made three saves.

Against UCLA, Jackie Prine had three goals for UCI.

Machanis had 11 saves for UCI, which will play Hawaii today at 8 a.m. at UCI.
