COLLEGE ROUNDUP:UCI women outlast Long Beach

IRVINE — Becky Bernhard, Jessica Broadfoot and Ali Borowicz won in singles to help lead the UC Irvine women’s tennis team to a 4-3 Big West Conference win over Long Beach State Thursday.

UCI (11-2, 5-0 in conference) won twice in doubles to clinch the team point. Bernhard and Claire Fermin won in doubles, as did the tandem of Borowicz and Jayme Hu.

The victory over Long Beach State is the first for the Anteaters in the past nine tries and improves their record to 29-14 all-time against Long Beach State.

UCLA 22, UC Irvine 7LOS ANGELES — Robyn Kaake and Jessica Lewis scored two goals each for the Anteaters in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation loss Thursday.

UCI, ranked No. 5, dropped to 10-4, 1-2 in conference. Newport Harbor High products Anne Belden (two goals) and Jenna Murphy (one) scored for No. 2-ranked UCLA (11-1, 4-0).

MEN’S GOLF

Orange Empire four-way

SANTA ANA — The Orange Coast College men’s golf team defeated Riverside and lost to Cypress and Santa Ana in conference action Thursday at Santa Ana Country Club.

OCC tied Riverside, 413-413, but won the tiebreaker.

Cypress shot 374 and Santa Ana shot 405.

Justin Gray shot five-over-par 77 to pace the Pirates.

John Evans (78), Dana Halden (85), Grahm Brown (86), Kyle Ritter (87) and T.J. Vick (87) also competed for OCC.

The Pirates are at the Rio Hondo Invitational Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.

BASEBALL

Azusa Pacific 19, Vanguard 5AZUSA — Tyson Leighton went three for five with an RBI to lead the Lions’ 13-hit attack in their Golden State Athletic Conference loss Thursday.

Azusa Pacific (16-1, 9-1 in conference) produced 17 hits and a 10-run third. Vanguard dropped to 4-5, 4-5.
