Costa Mesa 4, Sunny Hills 3COSTA MESA — Zack Von Berg and Chad Peterson scored on separate consecutive wild pitches in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Mustangs to the win in the final round of pool play in the Newport Elks Tournament’s Costa Mesa Division Tuesday.

The Mustangs (3-0) loaded the bases to open the seventh via hit by pitch. Then the Sunny Hills pitcher threw back-to-back wild pitches to score Von Berg and Peterson and ended the game.

Von Berg also hammered out a solo home run in the fifth inning. Costa Mesa will play in the semifinals of the tourney’s Costa Mesa Division Thursday.

Corona del Mar 10, Mater Dei 8FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Junior No. 1 singles player Fabian Matthews and the doubles team of sophomores Parker Rhodes and Chris Damion swept to help lead the Sea Kings to the nonleague win at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club Tuesday.

Dustin Hladek and Ryan Caughren won two in doubles for the Sea Kings (3-0).

Corona del Mar plays at Edison today.

Fellow singles players Bradley Fisher and Danny O’Neil also won three times for Estancia (2-2), as did Chris Koreerat and Rony Argueta at No. 1 doubles.

The Eagles are at El Modena on Thursday.

Andrew Skjonsby (39), Chase Behr (40), Justin Morehead (43), Dalton Shane (43) also scored for Newport Harbor (1-3), which plays against Corona del Mar at Santa Ana Country Club today at 3 p.m.

Edison 188, Estancia 211COSTA MESA — Drew Bertoni shot a three-over-par 39 for the Eagles, who suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday to the defending CIF Southern Section Southern Divisional champions at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Andrew Ayala (41), Ryan Knapp (42), Pat Flannery (44) and Storm Hagen (45) also scored for Estancia (3-1), which opens Golden West League play Thursday against Orange at El Prado.

Sage Hill def. ChadwickPALOS VERDES — Sophomore outside hitter Bayle Smith had 20 kills and six blocks to lead the Lightning to a 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 15-7 nonleague win Tuesday.

Junior middle blocker Austin Apramian had five kills and six blocks and freshman libero Mattias Russo-Larsson had 18 digs for Sage Hill (3-1), which plays host to Tarbut V’Torah Thursday at 5 p.m.

JSerra 78, Sage Hill 32, Saddleback Valley Christian 8SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Andrew Dorne placed second in the 500-yard freestyle at 5 minutes, 14.97 seconds, a CIF automatic qualifying time, during the Lightning’s nonleague meet Tuesday.

Dorne also finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:59.44). Beau Caillouette tied for first in the 50 freestyle (24.81) and second in the 100 freestyle (54.81) for Sage Hill (2-1).

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Sage Hill 106, Saddleback Valley Christian 39SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Dylan Conroy, Jordan Smith-Newman and Cameron Cline each won two events for the Lightning (1-2) at a nonleague meet Tuesday.

Conroy won the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.72) and 200 freestyle (2:21.31, Smith-Newman won the 200 individual medley (2:50.9) and 100 backstroke (1:16.5), and Cline won the 50 freestyle (29.53) and the 100 butterfly (1:16.48).
