Best places to watch today

There really is no wrong way to watch the Toshiba Classic, which starts today at the Newport Beach Country Club. But here are some of the best places to catch the action.

  • The seventh hole: Considered the most difficult green, will require a deft touch by putters.
  • The 15th hole: A par 5 of 492 yards is sure to provide some happy pros as they pluck birdies and eagles.
  • The 17th hole: Newport Country Club’s signature hole. Water separates the tee and the two-tiered green. The heated and catered skyboxes surrounding the green are sure to be packed, but there is always ample seating lakeside.
  • The sixth hole: If you enjoy watching frustrated golfers this is the hole for you. A par 4 of 418 yards has two palm trees left of the fairway to protect it’s dogleg to the left. Those who try to take a shortcut might find there ball up in palms with many others.
  • The 13th hole: Sight of the only ace in the tournament’s history, by Sammy Rachels in 2002.
  • The 12th hole: For fans of straight on driving. With a staggered stand of trees to the right on the 373-yard par 4, if a tee shot heads that way don’t expect to be on the green in two.
  • The third, 15th and 18th holes: If long driving is what you enjoy these par fives are sure to please.
  • Every hole: There is also the mobile version of taking in the Toshiba Classic, by following a favorite player in his trek through the course. On Friday the crowds are thinner so quality position for every shot is easier.
