COLLEGE ROUNDUP:Gorgen strikes out nine for UCI

IRVINE — Right-hander Scott Gorgen struck out a career-high nine batters and gave up one run in 7 1/3 innings to lead the UC Irvine baseball team to a 9-1 nonconference victory Friday.

Sean Madigan had a personal-best four RBIs to go with a three-for-four hitting performance and Bryan Petersen collected two hits for UCI (13-5-1), which continues the series today at 6 p.m.

Vanguard’s Jen Olvera (6-1) won the first game against Judson College of Illinois, striking out 12 and allowing two hits.

The Lions (19-4) play two games today, starting with Dakota State of North Dakota at 4:30 p.m. and St. Ambrose University of Iowa at 6:30 p.m.

Orange College def. GrossmontCOSTA MESA — Matt Knutson recorded 16 kills and nine digs as the Pirates extended their Pacific Coast Conference unbeaten streak to three matches with a 23-30, 30-25, 31-29, 30-27 victory Friday.

Kevin Welch added 14 kills and eight digs and Alika De Rego had 11 digs for OCC (8-1, 3-0 in conference), which plays host to Irvine Valley Wednesday at 6 p.m.
