Orange Coast 12, Saddleback 5COSTA MESA — Mike Ferraro’s RBI single in the sixth broke a 4-4 tie and the Pirates went on to pull away in the Orange Empire Conference game Saturday at OCC.

Cory Olson went two for five with three RBIs, Eric Oliver belted a two-run home run, and Halston Barcelo was three for four and scored twice to help bolster a 13-hit attack for the Pirates (12-9, 3-2 in conference).

OCC starter Ryan Eccles pitched into the seventh to earn his third victory without a loss this season.

Sophomore Ryan Shopshire, typically a starting pitcher for OCC, earned his first save of the season.

Matt Hauser, a Corona del Mar High product, was also effective out of the bullpen for the Pirates. He entered in the seventh inning with the tying run on third and no outs and stranded the runner at third.

Saddleback fell to 13-6, 2-3.

The Pirates return to action at Irvine Valley Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Vanguard 5, Pt. Loma 3Vanguard 2, Pt. Loma 1COSTA MESA — The Lions swept a doubleheader from the NAIA No. 9-ranked Sea Lions on Saturday at Vanguard.

In Game 1, Chris Carls went 7 1/3 strong innings for Vanguard (9-6, 9-6 in conference) to earn his first victory of the year, and Brian Ducy got his first save. Lions left fielder Luke Iverson was four for four with two doubles and two runs scored, and Matt Voorhies and Zach Leighton each added two hits.

In the second game, Derek Craddock and Leighton had RBI singles and Vanguard hung on. Dustin Jones allowed no earned runs in a complete-game win, striking out four to improve to 3-1 on the year. Craddock and designated hitter Benjamin Linn both had two hits.

Point Loma fell to 15-7, 9-5 in conference.

Vanguard opens a three-game home series against the Illinois Institute of Technology on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

SWIMMING

NCAA ChampionshipsMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — UC Irvine junior Chelsea Nagata finished eighth in the 100-yard butterfly Friday night at the University of Minnesota to earn All-American honors for the second straight year.

Nagata’s time in the final was 53.11 seconds. She set a school record with a 52.73 clocking in the prelims.

Nagata finished seventh in the event in 2006.

On Saturday, UCI freshman Lyndsay DePaul finished 30th in the 200-yard butterfly.

DePaul, who did not qualify for the eight-swimmer final, or the eight-swimmer consolation final, clocked a time of 2 minutes, .47 seconds in the prelims.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Cal 8, UC Irvine 6 (2OT)IRVINE — The Anteaters erased a 2-0 first-period deficit to force overtime in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Saturday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

UCI sophomore Nikki Frish and Julia Fancher scored to erase a 4-2 deficit, the latter goal coming with 6:05 left in regulation.

After Cal scored, UCI’s Jackie Prine pulled the No. 5-ranked Anteaters (10-6, 1-4 in the MPSF) even with 41 seconds left in regulation.

Robyn Kaake led UCI with two goals and Lauren Machanis had four saves for the Anteaters.

Camille Hewko, a freshman out of Corona del Mar High, scored an overtime goal for the No. 4-ranked Golden Bears (7-6, 3-2).

TRACK AND FIELD

WALNUT — UC Irvine senior Ricky Barnes and junior teammate Sky Johnston each won events Friday at the Ben Brown Invitational at Mt. San Antonio College.

A total of 10 Anteaters distance runners posted qualifying marks for the Big West Conference Championships.

Barnes won the 5,000 meters with a time of 14 minutes, 16.74 seconds, while Johnson won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:21.05.

UCI junior Candice Proctor finished sixth in the women’s 5,000. Her time of 16:58.87 was the ninth-best time in school history.

UCI junior Sara Mickelson placed seventh in 17:02.96, the No. 11 time in the UCI record book.

Sophomore Kendall Bruton finished third in the women’s 3,000 steeplechase in 11:26.04, and junior Amber Gordon was seventh in 11:46.43.

SOFTBALL

Vanguard 10, Dakota State 2TUCSON, Ariz. — Vanguard won both its games Saturday at the Tucson Invitational Games, beating Dakota State in six innings and getting by St. Ambrose of Iowa in five innings.

In its first game, the Lions’ Jennifer Rynda was three for four with a double and earned her sixth win of the year in the circle.

She surrendered just two hits.

Jen Olvera had two hits and two RBIs for Vanguard (21-4), and Rachel Bomgren had a solo home run.

The game against St. Ambrose was close until Vanguard scored six times in the bottom of the fifth.

Melissa Forrester allowed one run on five hits, improving to 4-1 on the season.

Olvera was two for two with three RBIs, including her second homer of the season.

Forrester, Bomgren, April Glenn, Jenna Bergh and Katie Daniels all had two hits tp bolster the Lions’ 14-hit attack.

Vanguard resumes play at the tournament on Monday and Tuesday. The Lions will play Benedictine College of Kansas on Monday at 8:30 a.m.
