A number of off-duty firefighters were called to work Sunday in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa after their co-workers were sent to assist in fighting a fire that broke out in Anaheim Hills Sunday.

Five engines from each city’s fire departments were dispatched to the 1,000-acre blaze, the first just before 9 a.m. and the last around 2 p.m., authorities said.

Newport and Costa Mesa firefighters are expected to stay through Monday morning to fight the blaze, according to Newport Beach Fire Deputy Chief Dave Mais.

“There was a brief few moments where we were less than fully staffed but we were able to get back up to full staff quickly,” Mais said about the absence of local personnel. “We have kept the city protected at all times.”

The fire is believed to have been set by a car that ignited.
